You don't understand. They are paying for looks and personality.
Well that's sad but typical. We all know its not because of her running
It’s partly because of her running and partly because of her looks. I don’t think there’s anything remotely sad about that. This message board proves that she’s a brand worth sponsoring.
Coleen Quigley got a very nice deal with Lululemon that, I’m sure, makes her a top 3 in the world compensated steeplechaser, despite being well out of the top 25 current performers.
The Cavinder twins are amongst the world’s best compensated female basketball players, and they don’t even play basketball anymore.
Alex Morgan is one of the highest total compensation soccer players in the world. She’s not on the scoring leaderboard in the NWSL.
This is not a new phenomenon. Think Anna Kournikova.
She ran Millrose (8:35), Dr Sanders (4:006), TrackFest at Mt Sac (15:03) this year with seasoned pros. Sorry not mediocre. And all you can up with is one day when she had a bad race. What has Valby accomplished in her racing outside a few NCAA meets? Squat
You say this is squat?!" She looks like Kipyegon in this race. A generational talent.
You are in a Valby thread. Valby's last race was a national championship. Tuohy's last 3 races were average, not good, and DNS.
In a Valby thread, huh. Well that’s never stopped fans of Valby or whoever the latest Tuohy “conqueror” is from posting their opinions in a Tuohy thread. See how that can work both ways?

Someone gets it. This sums up why, in today's marketplace, Valby's compensation will be through the roof. Combine the looks and the running and it's game over - no other college runners are in the same league. Just the facts.
Maybe I missed it I'm not going to read back through this thread, but why did Valby not enter the 5000 for the USATFs?
She needs a break to completely get over her injuries. She only ran six races since cross country - two indoors and four outdoors (one invitational, SECs, Regionals, and NCAA Champs). With an extended break they can hopefully figure out what is wrong. She has plenty of years left to run USATFs and make a US team or two (or three, or ...)
If she gets over her injury and has Flomena Asekol to train with now, Valby will be a serious force in the fall. I think she needs to be considered the favorite for the XC title in November. Considering how little running she does, she has an insane amount of natural talent.
So let’s talk about an athlete that was undefeated in NCAA championship races for 2022 Outdoor, 2022 XC, 2023 Indoor and also set 4 collegiate records. All that is not just washed away like it never happened just because she had the bad luck to have ONE off day in the past 12 months. That athlete (no need for me to even state her name) is still the prohibitive favorite in XC this fall.

Men are at a slight disadvantage here on socials because of this. That said those girls have the hardware and the talent to back up their good looks.

The whole NIL thing is interesting. I just looked at Alex Morgan's Instagram account -- she has 10 million followers and her tictok account is shows over 400,000. Quigley and the Cavinder twins are nowhere close to that, but still massively more followers than Valby, who has around 30,000 followers for each of her accounts. Valby is not what you could call an "influencer." If Nike is paying significant money, then they're looking to the future for her as someone who can build a brand, but whose brand-building is still "in process." She has work to do if that's what she wants.
By "work to do", you mean post more selfies in skimpy outfits... and maybe get a little cosmetic work, too, though she is ahead of the game compared to almost all her contemporaries in this regard.
She's not getting this money just because of looks and personality. There are plenty of model types out there. Valbymania was running wild in xc because she was out there like pre dominating every field, smashing course records, and even leading nationals by 12 seconds before Tuohy reeled her in. And she did all this while forced to cross train between injuries. Then after months more of injuries and ten days off, she comes back at 75% to win nationals outdoors in the 5000m by more than 10 seconds in 15:30 in the Texas heat. That is talent. If they ever get her healthy and training normally, which is a big if, she'll be a force on the American elite scene. She will never be a kicker, but otherwise, she is about as talented as we ever see among American collegians.

Your first sentence. Yes, that IS mainly the reason why she's getting the money.
