Nice progression though I don’t know that 4:24 mile translates to 4:04 1500? With a closing 63 second quarter that translates to 16 seconds per 100m or perhaps 18 seconds for the last 109…yielding more like a 4:06 1500…maybe 4:05 1500 for 4:23 mile.

I don't think Chmiel has pro aspirations. But she has been a terrific college runner. First team AA in the 10000, 5000, and 3000. Three time top ten finisher at XC nationals, including third.
Really the only time in high school that Tuohy seriously gapped Chmiel on the track in high school was when she set the 3200 record, and Chmiel had broken 10:00 in the same race the year before. The only other longer distance track race they ran against each other was the NB two mile when they were both exhausted due to running the relays all weekend which Tuohy won without it ever being in doubt, but not by a huge margin. Chmiel was better in track in high school then people remember, winning state titles and running well at NB. Tuohy was faster in the 1500 by the time she was in 8th grade and was faster in every distance by her sophomore year. But by then she was faster than everyone. Tuohy was faster than Chmiel in cross country by her sophomore year, but Kelsey was runner up at NXN twice and won the Great Edinburgh.
Again I don't know if Chmiel has any pro aspirations. But I think she is talented enough that she could give it a real go if she wanted to.
And I totally agree. Chmiel can look back on her HS/College career with great pride! Like myself running doesn’t need to end with a pro career and can continue to be a great outlet for life, though the team aspect may be over. For most pro runners, like most pro athletes, there is very little glamor post college (and not much money). Very few are at the top tier and can aspire to greater glory. I believe that KT is one of those rare athletes. Look at the promise Prefontaine took out of a similar HS/College career, though it ended tragically for him, unfortunately. Even the best that medal at the Olympics have to figure out what to do once they pass their peak. KT is achieving so much, so early, that she has a shot at post college greatness. Let’s wish her the best and ignore the jealous ankle-biters here at LR. Her level-headed humility and leadership is what I admire, above her athletic prowess.

1st half did seem that way. Which begs the question, has anyone ever lapped the second place athlete? Im not sure she could have but it would be close.
Yeah, that was pretty crazy to see. Literally JOGGED more than 1/2 of it and then gradually cranked up a quite comfortable pace for her that obliterated everyone and was still casual about it. An 8:51 running that comfortably is jaw-dropping for NCAA.

That’s so untrue I don’t know where to start.
perhaps not literally jogged, but the 6:06 2000 looked pretty easy
Valby had a great cross country season, and her race style gave us fans that classic season ending championship. But her overall accomplishments cannot compare with Touhy's.
Better to start comparing Touhy to Hodkinson. They are almost exactly the same age.

The lapping of 2nd place runners is a small exaggeration. If you watch some of her better HS races, she could have had a a small cup of coffee waiting for the 2nd place runners to come in. In many cases that was Chmiel. 10-20 second gaps where not uncommon.
I think she will be president in 20 years after winning 10 gold medals.
I actually would bet that she never makes a US team because the women ahead of her will be around 8-10 more years and there is always another Monson or Schweizer running about 10:40 in the 3200 right now at age 18.
You got it! She’s gapping 2nd place runners like she did in her Sophomore HS season…
The second place runner Maatoug had run the 800 final less than 40 minutes earlier.
The hype really is incredible. I was reading comments under a Tuohy YouTube video and at least 5 different commenters compared her to Secretariat.
Meanwhile I'm sure I won't be popular in those comments because I pointed out that Tuohy would only be the 6th fastest Ethiopian this season, and 2 of the 5 ahead of her are younger than she is. Two of the others are mere months older. Only Tsegay is years older.
And that doesn't even include all the Ethiopian distance stars who haven't even competed indoors this year, like Gidey. Taye turned 23 two weeks ago and ran 8:26 indoors last year. Her one indoor race was only 8:47 but that's because it turned into a tactical race against several other Ethiopians, with Freweyni Hailu defeating Taye in a sprint finish.
That's the "wrong" Hailu. Frewenyi had never run 3000 before, either indoors or outdoors, before defeating such a strong field during a major indoor meet. She is 22 and has always prioritized 800 or 1500.
Tuohy hype is fine as long as we have realistic impressions of where she stands globally. Even if she managed lead pack she would be destroyed by the late kick of almost all the Ethiopians named above.
katelyn tuohy could have run 5000m, mile, and 3000m and easily won 3 individual titles and score 30 points ... mile was won in 4:40s, 5k was won in 15:55 like what the actual fk is inside laurie henes brain lately?
She's trying to be careful with Katelyn. When you have a talented athlete part of your job as a coach is not to get greedy and hold them back to protect their longevity instead of overracing them and wasting their potential with burnout and injuries. With that in mind, DMR and 3k was the right decision at ACCs. Coach Henes is good at her job.
Not if she were to "train" the same way they do. The genetic superiority and culture of running trains got derailed by the avalanche of Kenyan doping busts, and were always laughable in light of the Ma's Army precedent where runners with no running pedigree destroyed everyone based on chemistry alone. EPO and PEDs with lax or nonexistent enforcement is the likely foundation of all their alleged "talent." But it is the way of things. You calibrate expectations accordingly.

Once again the stupid @tuohyfans opening his mouth. Tuohy chose to run the DMR. Also this is ACC, and last, who care about your stupid fanatic mind. Tuohy will run in the NCAA championship the trio of distance runs, if she chooses to. Your obsession of Tuohy is creepy and unhealthy, you should consult.
Same old BS. You saw her beat all expectations at the Monrose Games. That’s because she had real pro competition. And she still finished 3rd, destroying the old mark by 6 seconds. When’s the last time a WR went down by those numbers? Put her in some races against the Ethiopian/Kenyans and her improvement will be effected. With marginal competition the improvements come slower. There are no guarantees. Our athletes have football/baseball/basketball to compete for their talents. Running is way down the line of attention getters. Listening to you we should give up since we’ll never be able to compete. I heard the same thing about soccer and other sports not born in America. The naysayers come out of the woodwork around here, like clockwork. Showing off their jealousies, bitterness and ignorance. I sure hope the athletes don’t read this ankle-biting garbage. It might effect their enthusiasm for the sport…
