She needs to go pro now. There will never be a time that her stock will be this high. Runners get injured. Runners get burned out. Runners plateau. Her 3000 performance is by far the best thing she has done. I think she could get a 5 year deal worth $200K per year right now. It is easy to finish school while running professionally. Be smart. It didn't work out well for King Ches.
Leaving the NC state set up she currently has makes 0 sense unless she goes to altitude and quits school. If she finishes college as a pro, she would be paying out of state tuition, having to pay for travel, housing, food etc. She's clearly running well now, if she goes pro but stays in her current situation, she loses around 60k a year in untaxed benefits by going pro. Her 200k is taxed (137k takehome), and if she wants to stay in school she then has to pay at least 60k to maintain her current set up at NC state. That leaves her with an 80k to invest or whatever. Keep in mind, she has a 60k NIL deal currently, which she would lose by going pro or at least have it counted as part of the 200k. So she only gains 20k for leaving the NCAA system and keeping her training at NC state. As we saw on saturday, she isn't quite ready to contend for the win at a major meet, I'm not sure she can make a US team currently. I think it makes sense at the cost of losing 20k a year, to stay in the NCAA and win more championships, build her legacy, etc. Makes sense.
Although the injury risk is real, she's clearly thrving in her current enviroment and at the NCAA level, and she doesn't gain much by going pro. If she wants to drop out and actually be a pro time pro, that's different, but I don't think she gains much by going pro and staying in college.
thats exactly why shes running indoors vs the pros .. every race katelyn becomes a better (tactically) and faster runner
While i agree every race against competition that is actually equal to her or better will help, but at this point now that we know what shes capable of i'm not sure how much each successive controlled time trial is going to help. Tuohy is at the level that she needs to be preparing for championship style races. I would love to see her in some more pro races with no pacesetters to gauge how much she has actually gained tactically.
What? Hunter had his college paid plus more money than he can ever spend. You are afraid to answer the what if question. What if she has a career ending injury tomorrow? What if she stagnates?
Hunter wasn't getting NIL money in college, the math is totally different for when he was doing this. I factored in the NIL money as a mean reason why it doesn't make sense for her to go pro.
Also i think part of the reason hunter didn't work out is because he was robbed of valauble development. He was pushed into pro races before he was really ready to compete there, I don't know if he would have won NCAA's in any distance as a frosh. he got thrown to the dogs, and that didn't really seem to help him. I think he would be a better runner now if he went to oregon. The only reason he got signed is because adidas knew he would be a nike athlete otherwise.
If you can't participate in a meaningful discussion pertaining to the present top college runner, please don't open the thread. And please don't resort to insults if you choose not to participate. I like Tuohy as much as you. I don't know her, nor do you. She is a top college athlete worthy of speculating about.
She is an elite college runner who is an average pro.
???? average pro lol ??
she ranks 6th in the US and 11th in the WORLD in the mile
3rd in the US and 5th in the WORLD in the 3000m
and shes not even a PRO!! nor training like a pro and shes not even training at altitude and has less training time because she goes to school and spends time studying hahahahahha nice try hater
What ranking are you talking about? She is ranked 55th in the world in the 5000m (3000m – 2 miles) and doesn’t make the top 100 in the 1500/mile. She does have the 10th fastest indoor mile time this year and 5th fastest 3000 time. But fastest times lists are meaningless this early in the season with indoor only. Has Kipyegon run a mile this year? Has Tsegay or Hassan run a 3000? And indoor miles are seldom run outside of the US.
The question is can she get her 3000 time down to mid 820s in the next year to move up in the world rankings just by training with and racing women a lot slower than her week in and week out.
Mary Decker was #4 in the world at 800 at age 14, broke the indoor mile world record at 15, and broke the indoor 800 world record at 16. And she didn't have super shoes or fast tracks like Boston Univ.
Let me know when Tuohy or any other American matches the "Double Decker" from Helsinki.
She should go pro. But she won't because her ego is too big. She will milk it as long as possible before she is just another 14:45 type running somewhere off screen.
