Like the rest of us I did not see the full race but Tuohy looked like she eased her foot off the gas approaching the line. There was no second kick or drive to the line. Chelangat looked like she was racing to win like she did last year. She generally races to win. She was not tempoing with her teammate, who she gapped at the line. KT just has that 1500 speed that her competitors do not have. She blew it open in the last K.
Not discounting the home course advantage that OK State has, but assuming everyone is healthy I would say her main competition will be Valby. I am sure the UF coaches are in the laboratory with her as we speak, and I have this image of Ivan Drago's training montage in my head.
Valby and McCabe are the two relevant unknowns, but after Tuohy’s ND performance, I wonder if something like Ingebrigtsen’s dominance in the 1500 is emerging in NCAA XC. The Canadian’s tenaciousness and racing brain is, in my view, second to no one in the college ranks, but even if McCabe smokes the middling field Sat in Louisville (which she should), she needs to raise her level even higher than last Fall to challenge Tuohy in Stillwater. Regardless of how Nats plays out, everyone on this thread should be happy next Summer when both athletes make national teams for WC 2023. Early days, still.
I like McCabe, and I hope she has a good season. But she is one of the runners I keep expecting to do well on the big stage.....but doesn't seem to come through in those meets. Hopefully she had a good season.
I think the poster means (and I agree) is that in a 5 or 6K most of the kick comes from being more fit and not just having faster 1500 speed. Everything else being equal being faster in a sprint helps, but usually the fit piece governs. At least imho.
I dont get the screaming. Do they really think she hears them?
Yes athletes do hear people screaming for them even in the heat of battle. Perhaps your hearing isn't so good?
TBH we mostly scream for ourselves. It's a way to release tension, or to feel like we're participating somehow. Or something.
But even in very noisy conditions it's often possible for the athlete to hear her/his name. That will get through. So for anybody who's new to the coaching business, or maybe new to the cheering business: If you really want/need to get some information across during a race, start with the runner's name; then the info (keep it short and simple--and loud); and finish with something briefly encouraging, or just the runner's name again.
No guarantees that s/he will actually get the message, but if you do it that way there's a chance.

but then if thats the case then why cannot chelangat run a 3:00 like katelyn if shes also fit?? chelangat is the 10k champion and even on a bad day will finish top 10 or top 5 at nationals but then i dont think she can run as fast as KT in the final stretches of the race
Let's just say everyone if fit, obviously everyone that is with the front pack at the 5k are all fit but then having that 1500m and 800m speed is an advantage at the last stretches, no matter how fit you are, if you do not have the raw speed to finish, you'll get passed! IMO, Respectfully though.

WV is supposed to be at Nuttycombe. Will Tuohy run Nuttycombe? Valby will be an unknown until she goes up against AR at SEC meet.
I read that Chelangat closed in 2:56 last year. So yes, she does have speed. She was battling another runner. She one of the fastest closes in ncaa last year, after doubling from the 10k.
Mccabe is very strong and I am surprised she is not ranked higher. She has the fastest 3k of the top contenders and is an XC beast.
I think many are focusing on her late indoors and outdoors performances post the winter injury. If she was able to fully train over the summer she should be once again a top XC runner.
I searched for last year's results and you are correct, Chelangat battled with her teammate, she ran 2:56 for the last k but for a time that 20 seconds slower than Tuohy's time yesterday. Fair enough, Chelangat is a fast 5000m runner.
My impression is that the course was very flat. A grass running track. So - fast. Is that most of your x-country courses? My experience of x-country was hills, swamps, fences - and agony.
