Six years after the final New York Diamond League, world-class track & field returned to NYC and all eyes were on Sha'Carri Richardson. NYC Grand Prix - Official Discussion Thread. Holy SHI*. Devon Allen. 12.84!!!! OMG.
I saw that. Those kids are in the Bantam age range of Youth track. It's huge when the kids at the age are not just participating in the sport but also aware of the pros. Basketball is king with this. Those young AAU kids all have 2 or 3 favorite NBA players at that age and it drives the sports' popularity.
Bro, that was Sowinski's 203rd sub 1:50 800 and he ran within less than 1s of his pr. Gotta admire his consistency. Dude is legit and always tries to race hard. Murphy will prob round into form in another week or 2, but Sowinski gets another couple scalps this round
Aside from the 5"x7" postcard mailer, it was not publicized well. NYRR is the biggest club in the area, did they partner up with them to send out email, or advertise on their website or similarly? (Honestly asking, don't know). There are many other clubs that have weekly email news/updates and could have put in an ad for a small fee. You might have gotten a few more to show up.
You didn’t get a personalized invite mailed to you?

I sat in section 201, the finish line area. That section was 90% full. Did not realize the other end of the stadium (by the starting line) was almost completely empty. Seems like the stadium was only at 30% capacity. Shameful. I know we have more track fans in the metro area.
Other quick observations:
--SC Richardson is a rock star. She got the loudest ovation and when she went back to the warm-up area, she had a lot of screaming fans waiting for her. It was great to see. 2nd most popular was probably Noah Lyles. We need more personalities in T&F.
--People waited a real long time at the concession stand. The people around me just bought packaged items. Do they not have enough people working there? Or have another cart/free-standing tent to sell these items. Seems like an easy way to make some extra money.
--I had to futz around my phone trying to find the schedule, entrants, etc. A schedule of events/scorecard/magazine would also have been helpful. World Athletics should have a framework, where they provide 50% of the content (stories, pictures, previous athletes results) and the local Org committee adds the rest. It would be another item that can be sold. (At the very least have a QR code that we can scan upon entering.
--Again, no merch to sell, another missed opportunity.
--Always nice to see the Jamaican fans. They always show up! True supporters of the sport!
--The fastest kid races was fun to watch. Did not take too much time out of the program and a nice diversion. Sort of like all the between inning entertainment you see at baseball games nowadays.
--The 1500m Oly Dev races were really good. Men's was won in 3:37. Eric Sowinski paced that race too! As a side, the Master's 1500 had only one entrant, so they put him in the OD race. He ran all alone from the gun. Ran great from the AG (45-49) perspective, but must have sucked from his POV.
--Ichan stadium is really centrally located. Easy to get to from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, LI, Westchester and many parts of Jersey. And they don't charge for parking! (shh!) A meet of this caliber should be able to attract more fans. I can't imagine everyone went camping. LOL.
The meet was expected to be a washout with thunder storms predicated for almost the entire day. They probably lost a 1000 day of ticket sales due to that. Lucky the winds shifted and they were able to get the meet in. It wasn't looking good the day prior or even the morning of.

Yes, the weather turned out to be great. I did have a complete change of clothing in my car in case I got drenched.
Nevertheless, the marketing for the meet was practically non-existent, there was not one item I could buy and the food line was ridiculously long. Can't they make an arrangement with a food truck or two? It's almost like they don't want our money.
In any case, hope that Icahn becomes a regular stop on the Continental Tour.
