Yes, he ran 4:03. That put him fifth in the mile last year, which is very good. This time puts him fifth all-time and first all-time high school in an unpaced mile. That's an entirely different level.
However...there is NO comparison between his performance and Ryun's 3:58.3. Ryun's mark was set on a CINDER TRACK, in the famous KANSAS WINDS with 1965 shoe "technology". Ryun would've run 3:51 or better under the same situation as young Mr. Gary in HS by himself.
Point noted, but keep in mind this was part of his routine meet day of 3:57 / 1:50 /49 and he did it at the Catholic schools league meet. No tumbleweed just broken glass and drive-by shootings on 'the streets of Philadelphia'. Martin is old school, only love and respect for Congressman Ryun.
The race was at Cardinal O’Hara in DELCO (not in Philadelphia).
No special meet needed, just go do it at the league meet.
Does he train with his high school team? Scanning the results for the meet (and the PCL Cross Country results from last Fall), it doesn’t look like Archbishop Wood has any other guys running under 5:00 for the mile, 11:00 for the two mile or 18:00 for 5K Cross Country.
Stop with the exxagerations of what he actually ran, many have done this already.
He did not run 3:57
he ran 3:57.98 or a snap of the fingers from 3:58.0 much closer to that than the 3:57 referenced tons of times already, he did not run 1:50 either, he ran 1:51.29
Is is that hard to list the correct times, especially when comparing marks from recent and yesteryear?
According to both MileSplit and Athletic Net, Gary Martin ran 1:49.68 at the John Heins Invitational (April 8, 2022, Upper Moreland HS) running "unattached".
Gary does most of his training with the team. He does key workouts and long runs mostly by himself. My son is #2 on the team with average times of 2:00 800m, 4:37 mile as a Junior). What makes Gary special is his self motivation (not the coaching) and doing all the little things right, nutrition, sleep, recovery, etc...
