That’s my thinking as well. I try to find the minimum dose of training required for the desired result. SJD has been very open about loving long runs and high mileage, though. That’s what he enjoys so I don’t see him dialing the mileage back.
His “mad scientist” approach is frustrating to a lot of people because he isn’t objective enough to truly evaluate what’s going on. That’s the trouble with being self coached, you lose that outside perspective.
also, if he truly wants to be a mad scientist and put all theories to the test, he should hire a coach for a year and see if he does better or worse. You can’t claim to be a mad scientist if you’re leaving stones unturned.
