Mile Lundgren,
Thanks Mike, you are right five days would be more realistic. For my off period I backpack which is still pretty rigorous, or downhill ski. So the thought process was getting away from running. And agree that doing nothing is counterproductive. Here are some ideas that I would consider and do myself if I was training for a half marathon.
I would use the Daniels’ outline for introduction of modalities and VDOT for paces. A six month build-up is ideal. Weight training twice a week until about six weeks out from the key race. One should have a process to monitor any cross training just like running volume. Walking mileage since it is weight bearing can be counted like running volume, of course with the understanding that it is low intensity and not equivalent. Racing 5ks and 10ks to test fitness, progress and make adjustments along the way (using VDOT).
To give an idea how one could structure a week here is a sample of peak volume week could be structured. This training is still tough, but the idea is to give the muscles and connective tissue a running break.
Monday: 6 miles; 16 x 100m 2 easy, 2 strides
Tuesday: am- 2 miles walking; pm- 40 minutes spin bike @ alternating 3 min sitting 90 RPM, 2 min standing 65 RPM
Wednesday: am- 4 miles easy; pm- 2 miles warm-up; 800m @ interval pace; 800m easy; 3 miles @ tempo pace; 800m easy; 800m @ interval pace; 800m easy; 4 x 200m @ repetition pace / 200m easy; mile cool-down
Thursday: same as Tuesday
Friday: same as Monday
Saturday: am- 1 mile warm-up; 3 x mile @ tempo pace with 2 min rest; 6 miles easy; 2 x mile @ tempo pace with 2 min rest; mile easy; pm- 4 miles easy
Sunday: Off
The volume would be 40+ running, 4 miles walking, 1:30 minutes spin bike in six days over ten sessions with one day off. Again this is not easy training, but it does provide enough non-weight bearing and less intensity to make it reasonable. Lastly, all of this could be done on the road or trail using equivalent times and or gps.
Not advocating this as a one fit to all, just writing what I believe one could consider. Of course adjusting for individual preference or tolerance.
