Preview of the past two weeks!!!!
Southwest -
Herriman - 179,177,175,175,174 - utah region 2
American Fork - 186,179,179,174,172 - utah region 3
Riverton - 180,180,177,168,164 - utah region 2
Niwot - 183,181,175,174,172 - Desert Twilight
Lone Peak - NA
Valor Christian - 185,172,171,165,165 - Portland XC
American Fork and Herriman are still the top 2 teams in the nation. Riverton and Lone Peak looked as if they were falling behind early season. However, they picked up the slack and are now able to compete at a very high level. They have build experience and fitness to get to where they are at now. Utah teams were pretty relaxed these two weeks as they prepare for the state championships. For Colorado teams, 1 team in particular stood out, Niwot. Niwot is a very young team with lots of depth, they won the Desert Twilight Festival with impressive speed ratings. We will see which of the 5 teams will be able to go to NXN. Colorado's Valor Christian won the Portland XC festival.
California -
Dana Hills - 194,183,179,173,165 - Clovis Invitational
Great Oak - 180,176,175,174,173 - Clovis Invitational
Oakdale - 186,181,177,169,166 - Clovis Invitational
San Clemente - 179,178,172,170,167 - Clovis Invitational
Road racing season is pretty much over and transfers are now allowed to race. Dana Hill's experience at Bob Firman was invaluable to them. As they now have the experience racing more difficult courses, with the addition of their transfer, they were able to win the prestigious Clovis Invitational 5k. For the other California teams, this was the first time racing a more difficult course. Many teams tanked including the following teams: Ventura, St Francis, Beckman, and many others. For many Californians it was a rude mid season awakening, to switch from a flat speed course to a tough course. The heat was also well handled by the California teams and did not play an effect into their performances on this course. Expect California teams to come back much stronger at State as they further build experience with more difficult courses such as Mt Sac.
Northwest -
Coeur D'Alene - 184,182,176,173,170 - Nike Hole in the Wall
Jesuit - 185,177,171,171,170 - Nike Hole in the Wall
Rocky Mountain - 183,180,171,167,164 - Bob Conley
Boise Senior - 175,174,174,171,167 - Twilight XC
Crater - NA
Nike Hole in the Wall was a fast 5k course with some sharper turns but overall pretty fast. However, it was significantly hotter than normal, temperatures being close to 80 degrees for the championship races. Many Northwest teams don't have experience running well in hotter temperatures and struggled to run fast times on the warm course. Hole in the Wall was a two man battle between Coeur D'Alene and Jesuit. Coeur D'Alene won and Jesuit came in second. There was a significant gap to the third place team which came from California, Torrey Pines. Torrey Pines, a team that typically finishes close to Newbury Park, was much better adjusted to the warmer temperatures, and performed better than expected. Crater seems to be in the down low for now. Boise Senior won twilight xc festival. Bob Conley Invitational was won by Rocky Mountain.
South -
Southlake Carroll - 188,182,181,179,177
Deer Creek - 183,182,170,169,166
Bentonville - 180,174,171,168,163
Jesuit LA - 189,179,179,165,162
Austin Vandegrift - NA
Southlake Carroll has their eyes set on the NXN title. After their second place finish to Herriman at woodbridge, the group has regrouped and put up some impressive speed ratings at meets in Texas. Southlake Carroll now knows what to expect when facing national level competition, and is starting to race more difficult courses, with hopes to build experience coming NXN. Deer Creek suprised everyone to win the Chile Pepper Festival. The took the win over Bentonville. Jesuit La faced a competitive field at Nike Twilight Invitational, they came in third to plainsfield and Carmel. Austin Vandegrift is on standby.
Northeast
Christian Brothers Academy - 189,187,178,177,175
Westfield - 182,180,178,177,172
There is actually another team with insane speed ratings here, forgot name -
Two teams to watch out for big time in the Northeast are Christian Brothers Academy and Westfield. Both teams had extremely impressive speed ratings. The question is are they as good as their speed ratings suggest? We will find out at nationals!!!!!! I don't know much about Northeast, but I feel like most courses are wet and muddy, very different course year to year. It is harder to compare these courses to their past course.
Midwest -
Carmel - 186,183,176,169,168
Carmel won the Nike Twilight Festival
Southeast -
Belen Jesuit - 192,188,180,179,176
Belen Jesuit is one of the strongest teams in the nation. The won the Great American Classic with an insane team time.
New York -
Fairport - 183,177,174,170,168
Fairport is aiming to make a case that New York deserves it's own region by placing top 10 at NXN.
