With Rupp out until the Olympic Trials we're going to get an early peek at the void that's going to be left in American marathoning once Rupp retires. It ain't going to be pretty.
This right here. The haters take this guy for granted

2020 Trials qualifying window opened over a year ago.
There is now a four year "window". Geez. Some 20 years ago I would have made the trials in the marathon if the rules were then a four year window.
Well this really sucks. It is hard to imagine him returning to top form after this. Being so injury-free and consistent was one of his strongest assets. I genuinely believed he was going to continue improving at the marathon and that the best was yet to come. But if anyone can surprise us, it is Rupp.
It is awesome to see letsrunners being so cool and nice about this in this thread. It sounds like even the haters have at least secretly been enjoying the Rupp era and maybe even rooting for him behind closed doors. Could his future comeback be a turning point in his career among fans? He showed tremendous heart at Chicago and dealing with this injury may make him “blue collar” enough for you guys even when Al Sal designs some crazy space age device while injecting him with gallons of stem cells to make sure he gets the equivalent of 130 miles/week while he recovers.
Making the 2020 squad would be a huge success in these circumstances. If he somehow medals at the Olympics in 2020, it is time to erect statues.
+1

OK...you have gone too far with your ideas about erect statues of Galen.

He’s already qualified under multiple criteria, and the Trials are in February. Come on, guys.

I'm aware there is a time limit, whereas you are clearly unaware of all of the qualifying criteria.
"Qualifying window:
Marathon: September 1, 2017 to January 19, 2020*
Half Marathon: September 1, 2018 to January 19, 2020*"
Additional Opportunities:
1. Overall Champions of the 2018 and 2019 USATF Running Circuit will be considered as having met the “A” standard.
2. The top six (6) finishers in the 2019 USATF Marathon Championships (site and date TBD) will be considered as having met the “A” standard.
3. An athlete is eligible for “automatic qualification” (USATF Rule 8) if that athlete has accomplished the following. Athletes are not eligible to receive funding to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Marathon unless athlete has met Olympic Trials “A” Standard:
a.Winners of the 2017 and 2018 USATF Marathon Championships
b.Earned an individual medal in the 2017 IAAF World Championships Marathon, or 2019 IAAF World Championships Marathon
c.All members of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Marathon Team

The window is less than two and a half years.

He could likely make the 2020 squad running on a torn achilles...
Those are the new supposedly "improved" rules. They have not always been that way. The trials were much closer to the Olympics. The time to meet the standard was much shorter.
Your posting name is silly. If you actually knew track at all you would know the rules have been softened up a lot.
What marathon potential do you think Hassan has in her legs?
My posting name is accurate, because people who you know, follow the sport, know about the current rules. Your implication that I wasn't aware of what they used to be is misplaced, as you have no evidence of it, whereas you gave evidence yourself that you knew squat about the current qualifications. "Fool".

I also have haglunds so I'll be interested to see how it goes for Rupp, the surgery looks pretty terrible with mixed success.
A fun side note that I have learned is that the slang term for haglunds is "Pump Bump" because it is most common in people who extensively wear high heels...read into that what you will.
I read into it that you are a shallow dumb azz.

I read into it that Rupp goes out in heels a lot. I think most of the US running community has suspected this at some point. Maybe moreso during the breathe-rite era.
Huge bummer. This opens up the way for Boston to make Kipchoge a big offer so London can give Mo a chance to win London. You heard it here first!
Exactly!
If the tendon wasn't severely damaged they move it to the side, shave down the bone, remove the retrocalcaneal bursa and debride the tendon. He can be running again in 6 months, cross training in 2 weeks. If the tendon had to be totally removed and reattached with screws it's a much harder recovery.
My guess is he stopped before it got to the point of screws.
He has been running full bore with short breaks for 15 years. With such equipment as a underwater treadmill it seems that he truly may come out of this better than before. He will be able to refresh physically and mentally.
I wonder what XT they'll have him start with / progress from. I imagine he's already doing core and general strength exercises while he's in a boot or on crutches.
For Achilles, do people start with Pool Running? seems like too much dorsiflexion. Biking? Elliptical seems like the worst choice of the lot.

Cycling would be a good option, as it does not put much stress on the Achilles. Maybe the elipgo.

Probably have him playing snooker and bridge. With some burpees.
