I saw just the end of the race. Steve Cram was very complimentary, saying that he has a really good head on his shoulders and hoping he doesn't have the problems that Webb had after 2007. O'Hare looked great, very easy in roughly 3:54. And then there were about five other guys finishing close together with Hunter in there. That's a huge margin over Webb's time, which was of course just intended to break 4, not to do it by a lot.
How about this resume now?
Twice defeated sub-4 guy, 2 time FL xc champ in Fisher, FL XC champ this year, 3:58.25i mile national record, 7:59.33i 3000m national record.
Amazing race from Hunter. He missed the break the first time around, but was fortunate that the race came back together around 1200m. I didn't think he looked particularly strong until the last 400 or so, which he ran in ~57 seconds.
The other big story is Chris O'Hare. I think that's back-to-back weeks with a dominant mile win for him. He was clearly the class of the field today, as he closed a good 2 seconds faster than everyone else over 400.
Sorry, Tim Hutchings, I guess.

Okay, after watching that, I'm now officially SCARED by this kid.
That was freaking amazing.
Watching him and Fisher battle the next few years is gonna be fantastic.
Stream has been working fine for me the entire meet. Drew Hunter doesn't look like a high schooler. Check his birth certificate.
Incredible performance to split negative in a crowded race that didn't didn't perfectly for him in the first half. And he's been sick the last couple of days.
Hutchings said that Hunter's online coach was Tom Schwartz and that his mother overlooks the workouts.
A highschool 3:58 record without watching the athlete every day? Do you think that mom modifies those workouts as they are happening? Igloi would.
Anyway, pretty phenomenal.
I saw once they like facetimed or something during critical workouts.

Why not Maton?
Seriously though, I don't think Hunter will have to worry much about Fisher. They were peers last year when Fisher was a senior, but a lot has changed in 12 months, my friend.
So now Hunter and Fisher aren't peers?
Fisher should thank you for the motivation.
I like them both, looking forward to watching them race everybody, including each other.
Dang! And now the coverage from Bend looks decent. Got multiple cameras (which are operating!). Hutchings & Eugene guy (Pete something?) doing commentary remotely from Armory so the cinematography better be good!

Side effects of his dad being sick and giving him the bug.
What's the best link to see the cross country?
Hunter is on another level than Fisher was in high school, but it would not be surprising at all for Fisher, like many other freshmen, to make a leap in his first NCAA track season, given the much quicker workouts, higher mileage, and much faster teammates. Hunter himself will get that bump next year at Oregon and he is certainly much further along at this stage than Fisher was.
