Agree with the stay local idea, but when you live at around 6000 feet and most local races are pretty hilly, you don't have much choice if you want to run a fast time. Eugene is sea level and flat.

If it is a local marathon it might not be too bad. I'm running Eugene this weekend and my flight cost around $300 and the hotel's all jacked up their prices. Paying about $400 for three nights in a hotel. The hotels just rape you on weekends with big events. Road racing will become a "rich man" sport like golf eventually.
$400 for three nights total? Bargain! If you ever run Boston, $400 per night on the low end. $1200 flights from the West Coast.
i've been trying to figure out how to lower prices without undermining the race sponsor.
One idea i came up with is to offer team discounts. Let's say you can register a team of five for the marathon, then the price would drop say 20% per person. Obviously the individual runners benefit from the reduced fee, and the race sponsor would benefit because it would boost attendance - teammates would start pushing other teammates to join in and register,. That might actually be a good thing and certainly breathe some life into what might be an otherwise boring solo event.
The marathon could also recognize team winners.
I think it would be worth a try and i could see it really adding a dimension to events that has been otherwise essentially overlooked.

Gudaf Tsegay will not race the 10000m? Just to spite the federation?
