Gotta go with Howard Schmidt in 78-79. His brother Phil was pretty good in 82-83 too. Their sister Phyllis was also good 85-86, but she went to Easton HS down the road instead. Good people, eventually opened a law firm with a former teammate Peter Mason. Peter and Phil were like thunder & lighting on the 82-83 team.

This is amazing how he can go from talking calmly in the middle of an interview and switch gears and blast some kids for loafing then go back calmly to the interview.
York alum Noah Lawrence is also coaching at Hinsdale Central, which was #8 nationally last year and twice state champs in 12, 13, beating Coach Newton. And Jim Akita was coaching at Elmhurst College. The list of York coaches is lengthy, and these are hardly the only two.

I'd go with one of the Spanelli brothers. Either Joseph from 93-95 or Eddie 97-99. They also had a cousin Frank Eisenbocher who was affectionately called "The Enforcer" because he was like 5"4", but was an aerobic monster. Joseph once clocked a 14:33 at Detweiller in a quad meet and Eddie ran a few ticks faster, but it was at a sectional meet if I recall. Frank was more of like a #6 or #7 man, but still serviceable. All great guys. Eddie went on to work for the Postal Service for many years, Joseph got on working with the Parks & Rec Dept and Frank went to seminary school and is now a Priest.
York Spork, this list is incomplete without mentioning Peter, Paul and Pat McGuirk from 1974-1979, those dudes were fast. Not sure what they threw down at the Detweiller course, but they were the backbone of some great teams in the 70's. Story has it that if Pat had been born a girl then their folks were going to name her Mary. But alas the Universe had other plans for the trio the family moved four blocks from York and the rest is history.
We also did battle in some of the Chicago Metro League meets in the 70's. Two guys - John "Socks" McGraw and Michael "Frenchy" Phillips were always at it. They didn't compete for York, but mixed it up with them on occasion. All likable fellas. No idea where they are today.

This is a nice reminder for people who were disappointed that HC lost the state championship by 1 point last year
