Why are people blaming the African pacers? They did an OK job, but nobody went with them...Rop or Rupp could have easily held that pace but left a gap....Rupp ran well, but looked a bit like the turnover just isn't there. I think he just needed a faster or more consistent pace and he would have easily ran 12:55-13:00
When? In a 4x4 in high school? Certainly not in any race that he's run recently.

Except for the fact that Rupp has closed in 52 seconds before. It's correct to say he can do it.

9. Bumbi 13:13
12. Lomong 13:25
Afte the race, Rupp spoke to the BBC’s Jonathan Edwards.
On the pace being slower than expected, Rupp said:
“The pace went out definitely a little slower thatn I would have liked. At this point, where I”m at , faster pace suits me better, but I’ve been saying all year i really want to work on my tactics and this was good for that.”
On showing that you don’t have to African to excel at distance running, Rupp said:
“They’re human too. Obviously, they work very hard, are very talented and are very hard to beat but Americans are realizing just how hard you have to work to beat them. There are no short-cuts in distance running.”
On Mo Farah comming back from his marathon for a double at the Commonwealth Games, Rupp said:
“He’s definitely come back really well form the marathon. I’ve been real surprised how well he’s bounced back.”

M5000m - Alamirew ftw in 12:57. Rupp close, just cracking 13.
MMile - Souleiman should be able to win but likely not particularly fast. Centro over Willis for top Non-African.
Not to be picky but you had Jager 3rd. You got Alamirew so now I need Centrowitz...I'm going to need some help from the field.
So far 2nd and 3rd is not too shabby.
2:54 last 1200!
You have to be trolling me. YES I had Jager 3rd, you had him 1st, and since he was 2nd we were equally close there, no? And I was much closer on the time.
The 5000m I was pretty accurate.
I didn't specify before, but I think Centro will be about 3rd. 3:50.0.
The problem, as I saw it, was that Rupp got boxed at the beginning, despite the fact that no one else was going to push the pace, and that created a big gap to the pacers. He tried to bridge the gap, but it was too much and he made it only up to Rop and stuck in there without ever taking the pace. He looked good but did not dare going up to the pacers alone and then they slowed down anyway. Ridiculous to require a 2:53/4 final 1200 just to get around 13 flat. But that also illustrates why Rupp couldn't take the pace the last 1k, because they were flying and he'd cost himself a bit at the beginning trying to catch the pacers from way back. Alamirew can probably run a sub 3:50 mile right now and Rupp would be close. Another disappointing pace though. The structure of prize money/appearance money needs to be changed for the 5.

I understood Rop was the final pacer

Pac-10 1500 off of slow pace. But I think the key point is who he beat here and where others finished. Some good guys fell way off. Rupp was in it:

+1 3rd place and within 2" of the win is better than I thought he'd do. Unfortunate about the pacing - I'll be curious to see the replay.
Question to those who saw the race: Was there a moment when the pacers got ahead of the field and Rupp could have chosen to go with the pacers instead of sitting in the pack?
What's going on with Lomong? Huge opener at Stanford then gets dropped here off a slow pace. He had a great indoors last year but, aside from that, he hasn't done anything super crazy under Schumacher.
I think people's expectations for Americans is pretty high, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but so far I'd say we're having a very good meet!

I don't see any reason to be disappointed. Rupp's second best placing at a DL meet and showing closing speed that's rivaling the Africans. He's running in Paris and that will likely have a fast pace with everyone rested.
It seems like Rop was scheduled to take them through as far as he could, and Rupp sat behind him. But even at 2k, Rop et all were at least 100-150m behind the other initial pacers.
If Rupp skipped Rop's pacing and joined them, he would have been alone for more than half of the race once they dropped.
Decent showing for Bumbi coming back from injury
Good race for Bumbalough. Only 1 second off his PR after he had a not so great 13:28 season opener at Stanford.

I dont think galen struggled at any point really during that run, it was really just the final 200 really where you could see he that hes been focused way more on the 10k and had no 5k speed to close with. Even still he was able to pass longosiwa in the final 100 and take 3rd, id say overall a good showing for him off a slow race.
If he really did beat Longosiwa and Gebremeskel, that means he beat the silver and bronze Olympic finishers in the London '12 5k. Who was 1st and 2nd? Alamirew and...? Also, another poster yesterday in another thread mentioned that if Rupp got top 3 in this race, it would be a notable step up in his demonstrated 5k performance ability. I think Rupp is underperforming in the 5k and will get it right at some point with yet more experience, rather than always be doomed to relative disappointment.
honestly, what's the point of posting responses when threads and posts on running are being deleted all the time, often between reading and posting?
I love how people here think "the Africans" exist only to make things optimal for Rupp.
