I think there had to be 7 or 8 of us when I graduated.
As for how big it was, I'd say 6 inches.
Graduating class: 90
Under 5mins: 1
Me: 4:26 (stepping up, only time I ran it Sr. year).

Class of 40, and I was the only sub-5 (4:39). Most of the other athletic guys took up smoking during senior year, although few were runners before that.
1/260. Me, and I ran 4:56. It was a very shallow year for runners. Thankfully there were some talented youngsters to help with XC.
Class of 380- I was the only one (4:10).
We had 12 in a 5 year span. 3 of those went under 4:15.
Approx. 8 boys out of total class of approx 550. So, perhaps 8 boys out of 275 boys broke either for mile or 1600. A couple of boys ran those times as frosh or soph and then quit or went to other sports.
Sorry, haven't gone through the whole thread yet--have we heard from York of Elmhurst? Or any of the "big" schools?
Just wondering how many dozens they might have.
5/95
We had about 400 in the class. If memory serves, we had 8 seniors under 5 my senior year. Every person on the team who trained for the mile broke 5 that year, 16 people in total. We had the entire range: from 3:53 up to a couple of 4:59's.
Seniors were:
3:53, 4:36, 4:42, 4:43, 4:40's, and three mid to high 4:50's.
Three of us (converted 1500).
Maybe four, girl on our team was real close. Not sure what the conversion would be, nor do I care to invest the time to look it up. Safe to say she was far better than the rest of us.
Class size was around 220. Now that I think about it there were probably a couple more who broke 5 at some point early on before quitting.

Not to quibble, but I responded in the same manner earlyer than BMOC did and my cack is longer (though probably thinner; looks like a frigging stack of C batteries).
we had many wrote:
No, not to quibble, it is accurate, although I may be slightly off on our third guy - a very, very good runner who actually beat Jim Spivey in a mile indoors that year (to be fair, Jim was doubling that day). He finished second to Scharsu at the Atlanta Track Classic in the 2 mile as Alan destroyed the field in 8:44 ish - but I think he ran 9:04 - so the 4:12 from memory I think is accurate. Our first runner was second in the Golden West, losing to Gregorek who had the fastest time in the nation that year in that same race, and our second runner won the Atlanta Track Classic in the mile in 4:10. The best of all was the fourth guy - only a junior - who did really well the next year. He ran 1:52 for the 880 that year. The fifth guy was a good runner also, and I think his time is accurate (he went Division III, and was highly sought after at that level). All were excellent students.
Sweet. Thanks for the lesson. I always enjoy the phenomenon of fast twins!
154 broke 5. Class size was 1510 students.
I think my class of 400 had maybe one go under 5:00.
I never ran longer than 800 so it wasn't me.
4 from my class of ~430. We had one guy at 4:31, another at 4:50, me at 4:59, and a girl who ran 4:59 two weeks after I did. The 4:31 guy ran 1:58 outdoors that year, and we had another girl run 5:01 at the same meet the first went 4:59. All of us except the 4:50 guy are running in college now.
3 kids in a class of 266. we were 3 for 3 though and all were well under, one was a 4:29 guy and me and my teammate both hit 4:37. We never have a lot of depth but decent quality in our guys.
My Class: 3 for 3, 4:29, two 4:37s
Class 2 years older: 2 for 2, 4:36 and 4:45
Class a year older: 2 for 2 both kids hit 4:19
I think we had two, me (4:48) and one other just under 5:00. School size was about 2500 students 9-12.
One thing interesting was I smoked (cigarettes) for a couple of years in high school. 1st day senior year at the end of school the cross country team goes out the back of the school to do a two mile run. A friend talked be into going. I had just finished a smoke. I was in jeans and tennis shoes. I stayed with the group for about 1-mile then died. I jogged/walked the next mile trying to beat the girls that were on my tail. I quit smoking that day and stayed with the team. By the end of cross country I was #4 on the team. By the end of outdoor track I was #1 on the team and ran a 2:04 880 also. I think I could have gone faster with a little bit different coaching but loved my coach.
Tried to run in college the next year and could do 3x2200 yd repeats at 5:00min/mile pace twice a week with a 5-min rest in between (6-laps on a 5-lap/mile track at 4500ft elevation). Got pneumonia and never did see how I could do that year (think I could have done 4:2x or so). Only did some 1:58 indoors (1st race of the year in subsequent years) and never did better at a mid distance race. Had lots of injury and illness problems that kept me from seeing what I could do. Would do 51sec 400s in practice during 800 meter tng and found out I was a better sprinter (22.3-200 in practice after a couple of 23 flat 200s while goofing off with the 400 meter guys).
