Put an 18 year old Lindgren on a MONDO track and he breaks 13:30. Guaranteed. Put the Galen Rupp of two days ago on a cinder track and he runs 13:50. Lindgren owns Rupp.

We are talking about breaking records here, not who may have trained subjectively harder or ran in more difficult conditions.
The Heusden Track is faster than greased owl poop and I think that Galen Rupp's training is likely more intelligent and focused than Lindgren's.

Question: Rupps' record aside, who else finds finds this 1600/3200 business beyond annoying? NOBODY in the world does 1600/3200 except US HS. Do the mile or the 1500. Do the 2 mile or the 3000. Are US HS coaches so inept that they can't figure out where the 1500 starts or agile enough to walk backward 9 meters from the current start line? (To their credit, one of the local HS tracks that I use from time to time does have 1 mile and 2 mile start lines, although I don't know if they ever use them.)
I say go with 1500/3000. A friend likes to note that officials are just too damn lazy to walk from the 1500 start line to the finish line, thus one is stuck with 1600/3200.
I think your right that coaches can not find the start to the 1500. They have a hard enought time finding the start of the 100 meter instead of the 100 yard start point. I have personally watched a head coach not be able to decide what line to start for in the 100 meter even when told that the 100 meter is a longer than 100 yards. And he still made the wrong choice. However most HS coaches can count to 4 and 8.
Check out the "Lindgren/Rupp comparison realistic?" thread on August 3, 2004 for a description of Tracy Walter's coaching style that made Lindgren a world class athlete in three years time. Walters didn't have the doo-dads but he understood Lydiard beter than anyone - strengths and weaknesses - and applied this understanding to the training of a young man. Walters is the invisible man behind the Lindgren legend.
The funniest thing in the world to do is to read the first page of a long thread.
Then skip to the last page and read how much the thread has changed in subject.
Just thought I'd point that out.
Here's why Lindgren as a high schooler is better than Rupp. Lindgren was winning and or competitive in the races that he ran his records. Lindgren was a heck of a lot more concerned about winning than setting records at that point. Rupp was just going along for the ride. As someone pointed out before, put Lindgren in a race on a mondo track following a bunch of fast Kenyans and he runs a faster than 13:37.
That said, Galen Rupp is a great runner and he does deserve the high school record. College doesn't start in most part of the country until late August and until then he's certainly NOT in college.

It shouldn't be a high school record if you already graduated. I don't see how anyone can agrue other wise. Yest the kid ran a great race but he isn't in high school any more. Common sense will tell you that
I agree. Once you're done, you shouldn't be able to set a hs record. A few nat. champs should be the only exception. I can imagine some high schooler looking for a college that doesn't start until late Sept. so he can set the HS record in the September after graduation.
Bullshit.

I think this is a gray area, since graduation dates fluctuate from state to state, city to city, etc. Some schools go year round. If Rupp were post-graduation BUT it was a high school meet, then yes, it stands.
Two questions:
1. How long after college graduation do athletes get to set collegiate records?
2. Does Rupp still consider himself a high schooler?
