No. There are hundreds of guys who break 1:48 in the US that never get anything. Sowinski has been one the best known 800 meter runners in the world for many years and he does not have any deal and he just ran 1:45 indoor.

I didn't know Iowa had any former great HS runners.
I had 2nd or 3rd cousins that were good HS runners (Burke I think was the surname), but I was so much faster that I never bothered to acknowledge them.
Using ski runs as a guide:
Double black diamonds: 1:52 and below
Single black diamonds: 1:53 - 2:00
Blue square: 2:01 - 2:12
Green circle: 2:13 - 2:30
Fenced-off training area for novices taking their first lessons: Slower than 2:30

In 2019 only 38 men in the USA went sub 1:48. This is also around what the USATF qualifying standard is for making the US outdoor champs.
Sowinski could get a deal if he was willing to settle for a crappy one. He is holding out for an actual livable salary. By deal, I said gets a pair of free shoes, not that they make cash. I know of many 1:47.X runners out of college who got deals like free swag with some professional training group. They still had full-time jobs. I also know many 1:46.X runners who got actual cash deals. Currently, during COVID a lot of people are being dropped, so pointing out examples right now is a bit unfair. You have to go back to 2019.
Also, Sowinski “one of the best known 800 runners in the world”? I mean, how high are you counting? Seems like you’re showing a bit of an Iowa-bias.
That is not bias. He has raced more international 800s over the past 5 years than anyone else in the world. Others have come and gone but he is always there finishing in 3rd place in a meet in Italy one day and then 2nd in France and then 4th in Belgium all within 8 days. He is definitely in the top 10 of current 800 runners in the world that people would recognize on the starting line of a race.

this is so false lol

What do you think it should be, then?
In this thread my 800m PR (from college) has been labeled as:
Good
Amateur
Very good
Sub elite
Collegiate good
NCAA D1 elite to average
Seems to be in the right range.
We have our first humble brag.

I doubt it. Here are 10 800 runners I’m pretty confident are more globally recognizable:
Donavan Brazier
Bryce Hoppel
Clayton Murphy
Nijel Amos
Amel Tuka
Pierre-Ambroise Bosse
Wesley Vazquez
Brandon McBride
Emmanuel Korir
Adam Kszczot
Could probably sub Ferguson Rotich in if you suspect there’s a weak link. I will say, thanks to his hectic racing schedule and a couple of key indoor performances at 600/800 over the years, I’m sure Sowinski ranks higher in recognizability than he does in true competitiveness.
More people know Sowinski than Hoppel.

If so, it’s only because he’s got a bit of an Elijah Wood thing going, who also hails from Eastern Iowa.

Using Bob Dylan albums:
1:40.91-1:43.99 - Highway 61 Revisited - ? ? ?
1:44.00-1:47.99 - Bringing It All Back Home - National class
1:48.00-1:52.99 - John Wesley Harding - Good for college
1:53.00-1:58.99 - Oh Mercy - Great for a master (my dad is 60 and it’s one of his favorites, he’s not that fast though)
1:59.00-2:05.99 - New Morning - Has some of the pollyannish naïveté of a moderately talented HS fresh/soph
2:06.00-2:15.99 - Empire Burlesque - Like a kid who could be good but he’s heavily into drugs instead
2:16.00-2:29.99 - Shot of Love - The quiet, devoutly religious homeschooled kid who trains as hard as anyone but becomes resentful of himself and others when he finds he has no talent
2:30+ - Christmas In The Heart - It’s almost painful to watch him compete, but you do so once a year in December to fulfill your obligation
I have two children. A 8 year old and a 15 year old. The 8 year old's is 2:57, and my 15 year old's is 2:00. Is that good?
As a former 1:52 guy, this is how I viewed the different tiers
1:40-1:43 - Gods
1:44-1:46 - National Elites
1:47-1:49 - Jealous
1:50-1:51 - Scrubs
1:52-1:52 - Spiderman meme
1:53-1:54 - You have my attention
1:55-1:57 - You should think about moving up
1:58-2:01 - Not bad!
2:02-2:03 - Solid HS time
2:04+ - This isn't for you
i know this is VERY old, but i had to respond.. where the hell do you live? most people can't get to 2:00 after a few years.. much less 1:51?? so i guess the average guys where you're from are also running 3:45 1500Ms after a few years? and 14:00 5ks? jesus get tf outta here, 1:51 is faster than average even for DI...
guys, there are a lot more slow people than you think, these are the real categories
HS=varsity here, btw
1:40.91-1:42.99=world's best
1:43.0-1:45.99=world class (best collegiates out there and slower olympians)
1:46.0-1:49.99=elite (some of the best DI runners, no real chance at the olympics though, almost no high schoolers or DIII runners)
1:50.0-1:52.99=slightly faster than average DI, very good DII, and DIII, best young teenagers, a few highschoolers
1:53.0-1:55.99=average DI, fast DII and DIII, pretty uncommon but not unheard of HS times
1:56.0-1:59.99=slow or maybe very slow DI, faster than average DII and DIII, fast for HS
2:00.0-2:04.99=probably average DII and DIII, good HS time
2:05.0-2:07.99=slightly faster than average HS time, very good JV and even better for MS
2:08.0-2:11.99=slow for most colleges, average HS time, good or maybe very good JV and as a middle schooler this will virtually always win meets
2:12.0-2:15.99=kind of slow HS, good for JV, very good for middle school, pretty slow for college
2:16.0-2:20.99=slow for HS, slightly fast for JV, pretty fast for middle school (good chance to win), last place in college every time
2:21.0-2:26.99=very slow for HS, average for JV, fast for middle school (some potential to win), pretty much unheard of for decent colleges, but i'm sure there are some out there
2:27.0-2:29.99=slightly slow or average for JV, good for MS (might win meets in the early season), very slow for HS
2:30.0-2:35.99=slightly faster than average for MS, slow but not humiliating for JV (you still stand a decent chance)
2:36.0-2:39.99=average for MS, definitely slow for JV
2:40.0-2:45.99=fairly slow for MS, very slow for JV
2:46.0-2:49.99=slow for MS
2:50+ kind of irrelevant even at the MS level
remember that just because you run 2:15 or 2:20 or whatever in college doesn't mean you can't improve, go out there and get better
No average Joe off the street is going to come close to sub 2:10 what are you talking about
No scholarship limits anymore! (NCAA Track and Field inequality is going to get way worse, right?)
