Actaully if you look like most runners you probably look like a strung out crack addict so it was an honest mistake by the police officer.

I got hit in the back of the head by a cop with a god damn billy club. Apparently there was a drug bust near by and all the tweakers took off running. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but come on, I didn't look a damn thing like those tweakers. They ruffed my up a little and took me downtown. I had no ID and the whole thing was really bad. I'll never forgive those dumb, fat sonofabitches.
but it's mean to be mean to the mean.

Never arrested, but did get a $75.00 jay walking ticket with 400 meters left in a 20 mile run. My friends had a good laugh about that one for a while.
No...no, I haven't.
Two troopers got kicked off the force in Texas for making out in their squad car about three months ago. I thought cops were creepy enough, but gay cops ewwwwww thats really creepy.
Somebody on here say they like cops. I don't know anybody that really likes cops. I need to know somebody doesn't think they totally suck dick.
Cops are just people. I've had some crappy incidences with them and some great incidences with them--to generalize is wrong.
As is most often the case, treat a person with respect, and they will do the same. Treating a cop without respect just because they are a cop is not the right way to go, just like a non-police officer.
If you do have a problem/issue, there are other more constructive ways of dealing with it than just being a sarcastic a-hole to them. Very often this method will mean a pain in the ass situation and money out of your pocket.

yeah, last saturday night i was running at 3 am because i was working all day and some cop mistakingly thought a white guy wearing a white shirt and some running shorts and running along at a good click had to be causing some kind of trouble so instead of just stopping he decides to screach to a halt (probably waking up some of the neighbors) and make me stop my run while he asked me some pointless questions and finally let me go.
exact same thing happened to me in maybe 1995 in my hometown. we had a "town cop" who was a total douchebag.
pretty funny story: i just got finished reading this thread and went out for a run with some people at furman university. anyone that went to xc nats in 2001 or has been there knows there are huge fountains all around campus. there were some running girls in front of us and i thought i would be funny and take off sprinting full speed and dive in the fountain just as a juke stunt. well after i got out i continued running and sure enough a cop car flashes his lights and pulls me over -- in front of an entrance to a music concert. of course everyone is laughing and i'm rocking only shorts shorts and am on full display so i'm feeling the effects of the whole situation. the cop tried to yell at me, but gave up his efforts after i just kept laughing and everyone was staring, pointing, and mocking. plus i fed him a sideline story about how my back was itching from stretching in the grass and i needed refreshment. he let me off with a warning, "them fountains have barnicles that will cut you open, you know." thanks officer. p.s. the furman cop cars phone number on the side is like 864 - 294 - FUFU
another time i got arrested running home from a party, cost me 3000 dollars, 70 hours of community service, drug classes ( i don't know why), and 2 days in jail. apparently its suspicious if a white boy is running through the hood sub 5 pace at 3 am. if you ever come to greenville, sc, just remember its cop city.
this one happened about 4 years ago when i was running with my friend in the cleveland metroparks. we planned on doing a 10 miler, and kinda got lost due to construction on some paths and having to go around them on a path we had never taken before. well, the park entrance had been closed for about 40 minutes and we still had about 2 miles to go, when all of a sudden we see this fire going and these teens sitting in the middle of the path scared to death. they told us they were lost and couldn't find their way back, so they had made a fire to keep warm and were gonna spend the night there. so we helped them find their way back, but as we were doing so a police lady yelled at us, but luckly we just told the lady we would have been out sooner but we wanted to help these kids find their way out, so she gave them a ride back to their cars and my friend and i didn't get into any trouble for being in the park after it had closed.

I think you are entirely correct that being civil is a good way to go. However, civility has its limits when one is faced by an irrational, unreasonable, person that is legally empowered (but generally not properly trained) to make split second judgments that affect one's liberty (a fundamental right).
Generally, no matter how "wrong" a cop is, one's only "civil/polite/reasonable" (and safest) recourse is to first comply (this may mean having one's civil rights violated, being detained, strip searched, etc.), then lodge a complaint with the police department. These are usually internally investigated and go nowhere. So next, if one has the time and money, one can launch a civil suit in court - even if one wins, damages are usually minor, and the cop gets to continue as a cop (and usually during the trial they are on PAID leave) - not to mention that monetary compensation rarely makes up for being locked up, or beaten up.
Accordingly, it is not hard to understand why people get so pissed at "bad/incompetant" cops. One cop that is having a bad day can ruin the next years of your life (and have little or no impact on the cop) - unless of course you decide it's not worth it so you forget about it and basically submit to the system wondering how in the supposed most free country in the world you just got arbitrarily screwed out of your fundamental human rights by some kid that just (barely) finished high school (not to generalise, but to paint a worst-case scenario).
It's times like that that the movie First Blood starts to look real good.

Spelling the word "incompetent" wrong: how ironic.

People that do not stop when the police request them to do so should go to jail.
Bragging about resisting arrest is beyond my comprehension.
It ain't cool kids.
Yeah kids, but it IS COOL to show up at your alma matter, get drunk, steal memorabilia, and generally make a complete ass out of yourself...
Platter, you need to grow the f*** up youself before you start giving out advice to the "kids".
