1. Consistent with their training, almost to the point of being anal.
2. They listen to their coaches and don't do stupid shit.
3. They have a relaxed attitude about running. Which is not to say they're lazy, they would NEVER miss a run unless it was the smart thing to do but they don't sit around and obsess about running all day. That's my job.
1. Relentlessly optimistic.
2. Consistent, long, intelligent, tough training.
3. Selfless.

So, I make a point that many- perhaps not all, but many - drug counselors, psychologists, maybe even a lot of coaches would agree is true and you decide that's enough to employ the classic LetsRun arrogance call-out?
I don't know what set off your alarm there, junior, but I apologize if I offended your sense of... well, whatever.
Was it because I called those who automatically look down on people who use drugs or party as less intelligent than those who don't? If that's the case, let me say again, to make a simplistic deduction that someone's dumb if they use is uninformed and, yep, intellectually lazy. Guys like you on LetsRun are like the shmucks who sit in the back of college class and deride the prof with the doctorate in whatever they're teaching about whatever it is they're teaching, and before you say "Ha!", no I'm not in any way saying that I'm that prof, nor am I saying I've got a whole lot of knowledge, but I do know a few things and now I know one more: You're an idiot.
WHOA!
If we pencil in proper genetics...
1. Stability (mental, income, liabilities and assets paid for)
2. Proper Diet (includes abstaining from alcohol, caffeine, junk food)
3. Dedication (limited social life, adequate sleep, easy part-time work)

I would say there is an inverse correlation between partying/drinking/smoking and intelligence.
Science proves you wrong on this one. People with high IQs are far more likely to drink and smoke wee.

The ironic thing is that to believe in a correlation between drug use and intelligence is as lazy or just simply unintelligent as the perceived intellectual capacity of the people you're describing.
Using drugs and/or "partying" is an emotional response and a decision that has little to do with a person's intelligence. Someone isn't stupid for deciding to use drugs, they're only stupid if they think it's of any real benefit.
You got anything to back this up or are you just rationalizing what I'm guessing is your own drug use?
(By the way, look up "ironic".)

To the person who said both IQ and GPA are correlated with intelligence: what measure are you using for intelligence?
To the above poster: what you do for a living is certainly not indicative of intelligence.
Partying hard multiple nights a week and smoking weed is obviously not going to help your running. It will in fact hinder performance. There is, however, merit in being a well rounded person. The most successful runners I know are not defined by their sport. They take it seriously, are highly competitive, but are not emotionally attached to their performance.
The people that are defined by their sport tend to be the straight edge, in bed by 9PM every night, never touch a drop of alcohol, religiously run 100 MPW (no matter how sore or sick they are) kind of people. These are the people that break down, get stale, and become too obsessed by the process (training ridiculously hard) to realize that they are actually training for a goal (running fast). I find a lot of ultra endurance athletes fit this mould.
I was the one who said the two are correlated. What is intelligence?
I'll assume Wikipedia represents a decent consensus of what many people think that it is: "Intelligence has been defined in different ways, including the abilities for abstract thought, understanding, communication, reasoning, learning, retaining, planning, and problem solving."
So while I have no data to back this up, it is certainly possible to test the hypothesis that increased drug use correlates with a decrease in capacity for all of those traits listed. Who knows -- I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Okay, fine with me. I just need a source from a reputable, well-known university. I'm not saying you're wrong at all.
Oh, and just to clarify what I mean here, by "drug use" I am referring to the intake of illicit substances on a constant basis (not "I tried it once or twice").
why would drug use affect running performance?

Well, I don't think that a small amount of it would. A large amount, of course, would impair one's training and performance.

you've just repeated the same thing again. WHY would it impair one's training and performance
This seems like a very odd question. It's common knowledge that drug overuse impairs performance in all aspects of life. You really want a study for that one?
man sure whatever you gotta do, but just answer the question for gods sake
without having clicked on either link, i think the statement about drug-use needs to be qualified by WHICH drugs...
