With due respect, you take 72' Shorter and put him in a major marathon and he'd be fighting to break the top 10.
World-class marathon running today is on a whole different level. It's easy to be superman when you're out in the lead there's no one around to challenge. It's an entirely different story when you're on world record pace through the half and there's 10 guys still around.
