Running shoes were pretty minimalist right on up to the early 80s. Once EVA was invented shoes got softer, more stable, more expensive and the running boom really took off cause now more people could run without banging themselves up, i.e. heavier folks could run too.
Now we're going the other way: less cushioning, less stability and it somehow is supposed to be better after 30 years of softer more stable shoes? Bull sheet. It's a fad pure and simple.
I know it's a fad becuase there was this fat guy at the gym who never ran a step in his life "jogging" in a pair of Five-Fingers the other day. He did a few laps of the indoor track and then spent half an hour talking to the cleaning staffer about his new "shoes".
