Firstly, thanks for replying to my previous message without swearing at me or calling me a Moron! Perhaps you've got a touch of Christmas spirit!? lol
Anyway, the splits I have for Bile's 87 run is almost spot on what you have put on here. A couple of splits differ by a tenth or two, but nothing worth quibbling over.
As for the EL G's splits you've given above, I think they are quite a bit out. The videos of the race on Youtube are very poor quality, and there is no running clock on the (Eurosport I think?) coverage. However, the "IAAF Progression of World Records" book does have his splits listed as: -
54.3, 1:50.7, 2:18.8, 2:32.5, 2:46.4.
This gives laps of 54.3, 56.4, 55.7, 39.6 (53.5).
Kibet was leading at 400m in 53.6 (according to IAAF book), with EL G in 3rd place, at least 4m down. So the 53.6 for EL G is definitely wrong.
Having said this, the book also has Ngeny leading at 1100m (which he was) in 2:32.8!! This is clearly not possible, if EL G was behind him in 2nd place, going through in 2:32.5! I think there has been a lot of "guesstimates" going on with this race.
Last week I received a dvd with a German coverage of this run. The quality is v. good, and there is no interruptions to the race. You can also clearly see EL G going through each 100m segment. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a running clock! Nevertheless, I have taken EL G's split times twice now, each time finishing with 3:25.8/9, so I am fairly accurate, and these are what I have come up with: -
Attempt 1: - 40.4 (300m), 54.2 (400m), 1:36.2 (700m), 1:50.3 (800m), 2:18.4 (1000m), 2:32.2 (1100m), 2:45.6! (1200m), 2:58.6 (1300m), 3:12.2 (1400m), 3:25.8 (1500m)
Giving: - 54.2, 56.1, 55.3, 40.2 (53.6), 27.2, 13.6
Attempt 2: - 40.4, 54.3, 1:36.2, 1:50.3, 2:18.5, 2:32.2, 2:45.7, 2:58.7, 3:12.2, 3:25.9
GIVING: - 54.3, 56.0, 55.4, 40.2 (53.7), 27.2, 13.7
As you can see, they are pretty close to each other, but quite different from those in the IAAF book and very different from the ones you gave.
I think we can safely say that EL G's first 400m was certainly not as fast as 53.6 and outside 54. Also, that the 1200m time of 2:46.4 is at least 0,5 secs too slow. He almost certainly covered that last 300m outside 40.0.
I haven't got time now, but perhaps if you want to use these to find a flattened out time for him, then I'll think you'll find it won't be as fast as 3:24.8. Indeed, I think the pace he got was pretty even paced compared to most world records set at the distance. Not quite as even paced as his later Mile WR, but pretty good nonetheless. Also remember he had drafting from the start until about 1140m.
