What does that interview do for Adam Goucher? Absolutely nothing except put more undue pressure on himself. So great, you've gone out and told everyone how your going to make the olympics and you're going be vying for a medal, and that you're going to be in the best shape you've ever been in, and how you're going to prove the naysayers wrong.... blah blah blah...
First off, what naysayers... I think you would be hard pressed to find someone out there that doesn't believe in his ability. When he's healthy, he's an animal, he's already proved that and the rest of us fans know it. The problem is, he's been riddled with injuries and head problems since his days in Colorado... that's not being a naysayer, that's an absolute fact.
He makes it sound as if people don't want him to succeed, and that just isn't the case. Fans in our sport like one thing over anything else, guys running fast not talking about. Shit, even the Galen Rupp bashing has died to a standstill due to him kicking ass...
The point is this, now that you've come out and announced your comeback (how do you come back when your already a pro) to the fans, you just put a shit ton more pressure on yourself to back up what you said... and the shitty part is you don't have the greatest track record (pun intended) for dealing with pressure and your own worst enemy... your head.
The only person you should flip off is yourself, for faling into the trap that it's somehow you against the world. Had you just kept training, and started showing up in the results here and there showing off how much better things are going... you'd have the entire community rooting for you... and as of right now, you're the guy who's talking and hasn't done anything... and you put yourself in that spot.
Best of luck, I'd love to see you compete in London. But as of right now, I'm not going to get my hopes up.
