Give the guy a break. He took her from nothing to a silver medal in 4 years. He is most likely this way with her at all times and she has not left him. If it bothers her to be criticized so harshly, she could find another coach.
How do we know he hadn't already told her congrats prior to the footage we all saw? Maybe she was asking for some honest critique of what happened. Direct immediate feedback.
Why should be baby them and pat them on the back like gymnasts who get hugs no matter the outcome? Jen is a tough competitor and is a dominant athlete because she is coached tough.
Everyone seems to be hanging the guy when we know nothing of the way they prefer to have it between each other and we probably did not see the entire conversation. He did tell her that she did well for someone who has only been doing it 4 years.
As a coach, I know when my athletes come looking to me with that "what happened" look on their face, it is often better just to lay it out straight to them. He put his sugar coating on it.....just not as thick as some of you would like to see it.
Maybe he is a real ass. Bottom line, he has produced the national record holders at the high school and professional levels with a bare bones, get after it, mentally tough approach. Maybe we all should learn something from that. What do you think it is like for the athletes in China and Russia? Have you seen how their coaches often treat them?
Congrats Jen and good luck with the rest of you season.
