I can still remember Prefontaine, after his first NCAA cross win, being dragged down the chute. Hundreds of other people were coming very fast, and the officials just got him out of harm's way. On his own, he was able to stand, but that was about it--he hit that line with an empty tank.
Ok so I just watched the video and read this thread and it is very clear to me that all you guys are seriously overreacting (almost on the verge of hysteria). It is no different than most other races except that the finish chute Nazi's are way to quick to snatch up the girls and lug them out of "harms way".
I thought that the maniacs in the chute were way too quick to grab the girls. The only difference between these girls and the guy’s race is that they let the guys stagger off.
If someone grabs me right after a hard race I'm apt to let go also. Not sure why they were so motivated to grab the girls but probably some kind of response to "over-protect" females.
Like some other guy said they need a chute to direct traffic. This was unnecessary chaos. Hopefully they put in chutes for nationals. What a joke by Terra Haute.
This single isolated event has ruined the sport of Women's cross country for all time.
Worse than Normandy.
This makes me look like a pussy and I killed 9 men with my bare hands.
My take....
If I finished a hard 6K race effort and just after finishing a big dude picked me up and put me on the ground to the side, I'd probably stay on the ground for a minute or two as well.
Then multiply that times about 100 and you get the "incident" at pre-nats.
Relax.
I use to think it was crazed that collegiate women weren't running further than 6k, now I think that may be about right.
I was watching the video again and at 2:55 Mark makes a comment about the Illinois lady wearing the orange of the Alumni. I thought I heard him wrong and played it again. I swear that's what he says.
It was 55 degrees and cloudy! How excellent are the finish line people!!!!
We laugh, that only 40 years ago- the general consensus was that women running over 800m would cause permanent ill effects. Hah?! With video such as this for evidence, doesnt seem as backward.
Looked like the encore of a Great White concert.

They may have done a good job in your mind. Probably because you thought those females were lucky to be alive after such a hard effort.
I've never worked a finish chute but I've been in lots of them. There were times I was like those girls and if any of those douchebags would have grabbed me like they hauled those girls away I would have recovered and come back and hauled them off in a like manner.
The chip timing doesn't do away with the need for chutes. It's pretty simple. Just nudge them in the chute, close it and open another and then nudge them in another. Watching that finish was stupid and the results pretty much speak for themselves. Having a bunch of bodies on the ground in the finish area isn't my idea of "outstanding".
I think mustard gas attacks have higher survival rates
First, that was one of the funniest videos I've seen in awhile. The girl being dragged away at the end is absolutely classic.
Second, it seemed like the workers were way to quick to 'protect' some of those girls. Helpers were just dashing in and nabbing girls left and right. Not just nabbing, but full on grabbing, picking up and carrying them off. It looked like a kidnapping scene from a horror movie. My personal favorite comes in the last few seconds when the guy jumps out of nowhere and grabs the girl in green and hauls her off.
No idea what caused all that, but I would guess it had something to do with lack of chute (everybody finished and was like, whatever, I aint moving any further than I have too) and crazy chute workers. With that said, nobody got trampled, so I cant criticize the chute workers too much. :)
There would have been a complete bottleneck extending out into the course under your genius plan. ISU has a wide finish area- it worked beautifully. 55 degrees- cloudy, low humidity.

post a picture of yourself so we can laugh at you.
My team has been in 3 meets with Michigan so far this season. In the first one, Danielle ran just fine. In the second one, I think that I recall seeing her doing okay with less than a quarter mile remaining.
The Pre-Nats weather was great, and the course was in very fast shape.
Look at the 3k splits -- only the top few ran negative splits; most were falling off in the second 3k.
This was the 9th time that Indiana State has hosted Pre-Nats or Nationals.
I agree with the poster who said that the finish line volunteers/workers did an excellent job..I have worked finish chutes for decades and it's tough when these things happen.
In high school, I am in a state that just moved to 5K for girls..i thought I'd see alot more of this, this year, but was suprised that the lady runners handled the new distance very well.
I had to drag alot of guys away last week in state series race, who were just destroyed with effort...
To the person who said that they would "slap" anyone who tried to grab them (help them)get clear of the area....
If that EVER happens to me or any of my volunteers, you or your school will never run at our place again or worse may happen back at you.
With the chips, all they got to do is clear people out of the way at the finish..in the smaller races, you gotta keep the runners in line that's tough sometimes..
Even in college meets some large..Dellinger invite 2006 for example, I noticed they had to keep runners in their place of finish.
Finish line helpers everywhere..THANK YOU.
I too ran in the white division race and I was completely exhausted at the end of the race when someone snatched me and slung me to the side. I was to tired to resist and I fell to the ground when the worker let me go. I think the guys did a great job keeping the finish from being cluttered but the, "invasion of the body snatchers", experience was a little bit much. It was a great race and now looking back at the video it was pretty funny but I personally did not fall out because I was being a, "drama queen."
that's not cross-country that's grass track racing, where are the trees, the woods, the mud, the holes and the ditches. No wonder they all ran PRs.
That Michigan girl that was basically stutter stepping her way to a nice trot has done that on more than one occasion. The Notre Dame invite this past September was also a strong showing. And it was only a 5K!
It Illini not Alumni
