My friend, they were likely pointing at future author & humorist Parker who was in the final yards of taking the measure of you.

Nope. We ran the college division & NAIA meets that year.
Combine this thread with these 2 and you almost have the complete history of the national cross county championships in the 70s.

Jim H, you'll notice there really was a "Mr Chest" of the running world, my teammate Paul Stemmer. That's no illusion, Stem' guns really did look like that. A freak of nature, he's never been sick a day in his life.

Malmo - I hate to contradict you but Stem's one "illness" had to be something that would have made most podiatrists run screaming from the room!!!
He was, however, an animal in the weight room and would usually put the wrestlers, whose workout room was across the hall from the weight room in Rec Hall, to absolute shame!
malmo,
Is your old teammate Charlie Maguire the same dude that won Drake in 2:15 in '78?
He came into the stadium while a relay was underway and there was mass confusion. They had no idea someone could run that fast on that course.

From the Drake Relays Marathon Page -----
The 1977 field had increased to 503 with 414 finishers, and in 1978 it exploded! There were 1001 who officially entered (933 men, 68 women) and 805 finished. The race was won by Charlie McMullen in 2:15:19, and Janice Arenz in 2:47:46; both stand as Drake Marathon records.
The Marathon was now out of control. The problem of regulating Saturday traffic on congested streets for over 1000 runners was so enormous that it seemed impractical to continue trying. So, two major decisions were made. First, a new rural course would be used to help ease some of the awful traffic problems and to aid runner safety. Second, the day of the race would be changed from Saturday to Sunday. This was done, because the addition of events to Saturday’s track program made the finish in the stadium difficult and confusing for the athletes, spectators and officials. In 1978, Charlie McMullen ran onto the stadium track while an event was still under way!
Different Charlie - Malmo's teammate, Charlie Maguire, one of the toughest runners ever, sadly passed away early in 2006 at the age of 54.

In the same CCC meet at MSU where GMinty lapped the entire 6 mile field to win in around 27:35, I watched CMcMullen go under 4:00 in the mile for his first time. Believe he's doing some running still.
Question: Could Minty have stayed with the likes of Rose and Pre?
Tidbit: from tfn I June 1973 -
Central Collegiate Conference Championships, May 25-26
Minty first race 27:34.4 (5th fastest collegiate all time) 66secs up on 2nd place. (Friday)
Saturday 3 miles: Rose and minty pass 3 mile in 9:03 together at the gun ... Minty wins with a 55.5 last lap to finish @ 13:21.6 and Rose 13:27.4. Rose had run 4:00.8. This waqs the May prior to xc champs
Familiar foes.
two weeks later win @ Kennedy Games/Berkely: 3 mile 13:15.4. Best time for yr 13:10.8 (as of June 4, 73).

Has a cure been found?
I heard that he was a professional gambler. Any truth to that?

Yes, Stem's been playing poker for 25 years now.
Wow this is actually interesting to listen to you old guys talk about the glory days!
Hello. I bet Scott H. is a former Huron that I know well. I am curious as to how Bob Parks could tell anything about how I ended up going to the University of Michigan. I never had anything against the Hurons or Bob Parks. In fact, when I was in high school I worked out a lot and did time trials with EMU as my high school coach was an EMU grad. There was never any bad blood between EMU/Bob Parks and myself.
Yes, I am still the Co-race Director of the Honolulu Marathon. We will be holding the event this week-end. Should be a good one. We do have some Michigan grads like Greg Meyer and Mike Mcguire coming out to help but we also have a former Huron Dennis Kurtis (Doug's little brother) coming out to be on our race crew. Go Hurons!
PS I was never a substitute teacher...
