You morans that see this as a bad thing or probably inconsistent here.
Is Caitlin Clark is a good thing for the WNBA? Of course, but Angel Reese and others don't like it because the attention's not on them but Clark has been tremendous in getting attention for the WNBA. Trust you me, the US trials will be on TMZ and the other entertain shows tonight and with 6 days remaining that could mean more viewers for the sport.
Back in my sports management days, the first time I ever made USA Today was when it came to light light that I was arguing with an athlete. I thought the call was off the record and probably it was a little too candid but my name was nationwide the next day, word for word. My phone was ringing off the hook and that showed me that any press is good press. Go, Snoop!
not a great analogy ... caitlin clark is actually a player... you know, she participates in the sport... she is good for it... (you know like, anna hall or lyles)
snoop is an entertainer... he's great at entertaining... has nothing to do with the sport...
they (NBC) aren't growing the sport they are trying to entertain people who don't care about the sport of track... which is fine cause that's what they get paid for but it's not helping people be interested in track.
Well, people have to actually watch it to perhaps grow to appreciate it.

When the light goes off above your head and you realize that athletes are entertainers.... wait for it, wait for it....

I loved watching Snoop's commentary. I am someone who came to the sport not having any background running track myself, but after watching it in the Olympics I became more interested in what happened in non-Olympic years. Now I'm the one texting all my friends about the athletes and the sports and the times because I follow the sport regularly. It is possible for someone to become a fan of the sport, and if Snoop Dogg is the way someone gets interested, all the better.
What about the solemn joylessness of track and field!!??? What ARE we gonna do to protect it.
I hate to tell y'all this, but you might be shocked to find that at many sports events people dress up in big furry animal suits and shamelessly mug for the camera. At least Snoop is clever and likeable.

This.
The anti-Snoop crowd here is fascinating. It seems to be down to two camps:
-The drug / criminal angle: give me a break, he was acquitted, and the sport is rife with drugs. Also, the percentage of people on this board who've done drugs is likely very high. So we either have a bunch of Jordan Petersons (ended up a hypocrite addicted to benzos and had to get his blood cleaned in Russia), or people who... are signaling something else.
-The you've never been involved in my sport! angle: again, give me a break. If Snoop can attract attention to the sport for people not familiar all the better. Marketing = eyeballs = bigger ad deals = bigger purses, engaged crowd, more kids running = better sport. Sorry you're butthurt while you really try hard to break 18 in that 5k instead of enjoying the interest and entertainment. An Olympic-class runner would welcome the attention. The few I had a chance to workout with were always the nicest versus the wannabes.

Tracks fans "We have to grow the sport. We need more attention. We can be entertaining just like other pro sports!"
Also track fans "OMG Not Snoop Dogg!! He has nothing to do with track!!"
So here's my question, who do you want other than him? What celeb/personality would you get if you were King of T&F??? I want to hear some suggestions.
Moe, I’d like to see some documentation on your name being nationwide. Thinking it’s more bloviating on your part. You’ve got a history, ya know. Maybe your name and mail address on the mail delivery label on USA Today.
I am a massive autistic track nerd and I'd rather have Snoop on commentary than any single person you could name. If you are a normal person who isn't an obsessed fan like me, track is probably so boring to you that nothing will get you to tune in. If it takes Snoop being hilarious in his commentary to get my friends to give up Saturday to come watch a track meet on TV with me, I'd rather be doing that than watching alone while I listed to some hyper-technical nerd analyzing everything going on. Anyway we get Leigh Diffey who knows absolutely nothing about track and blows people's names every other sentence. At least Snoop would be funny or I could just ignore him and watch the race that I can analyze myself.
The NFL has spent the last 20 years pandering to women like mad, people that didn't care about the sport and didn't know anything about it. They started with pink shoes and breast cancer awareness, and put women on the sidelines who don't know anything about football and obviously never played it. Through this they were able to connect women to football and now women like my mom know all the players and never miss a Sunday game. It's an entertainment product. Now the NFL is huge and people tune in to watch the draft in gigantic numbers. And with all this viewership, the players are making a killing.
If we want track to me mainstream and the athletes to make huge money, it has to be an entertainment product for the masses, not an insider clique for autistic nerds like me. Snoop could be a step in this direction.
Maybe some protesters (dujour: whatever’s in fashion a month from now) can start a bonfire in the infield. Snoop is accustomed to viewing things through a cloud of smoke, so it may help his commentary.
I've got nothing against Snoop Dawg, but I personally don't find his whole stoner comedy schtick funny. But I never thought Cheech & Chong were funny either. Whatever, that's just my opinion, lots of people think it's hilarious...and that's fine! And NBC has been doing this for as long as I can remember, going back to having David Letterman's mom do one of the winter olympics back in the 1980s.
Still complaints but not one suggestion as to who would be better.
Put Craig Engels and Centro on the NBC roster ; they’d be Terry Bradshaw and Don Meredith of the Olympic Games for track and field events. True track personalities that are relevant and relatable. Engels&Centro > Snoop
He will appeal to certain viewers. More purist commentators will appeal to other viewers. A lot of people watch these things and if they continue to watch in the future, that is a good thing.
It's a big sport and it can handle some diversity in terms of who the commentators appeal to. It broadens the appeal and I am confident that the sport can weather it.
The people who like the tourists will watch anyway and aren't very numerous.
