Of course, parents can hold their kids back regardless of whenever their birthdate is for a variety of reasons. I'm not saying they can't, I'm just saying that's one of the more common reasons why a kid would get held back, typically if they're born in July/August
He is way ahead of athletes like Coe and Ovett at the same age on only one year in the sport and yet appears to train less than they did - only 25mpw apparently. Ovett was a schoolboy prodigy and the best 17 year old in the world over the 800m with the same time as this youngster at 2 years younger.
It is becoming a commonplace in this sport now to see these prodigies, "generational talents" - call them what you will - running times that championship athletes used to run. And sometimes on less training.
I'm blown away by this time. What an incredible talent. 2:12 in 7th grade, 2:00 in 8th grade, and now 1:47 in 9th grade. He just beat a very good Patricky Hilby who won indoor nationals.
Just short of the olympic trials standard of 1:47.50, would have loved to see a high school freshman in the opening rounds. But man, sky is the limit for this kid right now.
Also wanted to point out that he ran his 400m PR of 47.60 back in March and his 200m PR of 22.12 on March 1st. He wasn't even close to his peak of the season yet. So this kid is not just an 800 phenom, but he is a national threat in multiple events in the future.
Would have been nice if the announcers knew who the runners were, instead of resorting to generic chatter and waiting for live results to know who was leading at the 400 and then the end. Having all the same uniforms didn’t make it easier for them. If they could all get the same haircuts and same shoes would that be even better? (No)
Yeah, having all runners in the same uniform is horrible for spectators. I hate when watching a diamond league and everyone has the same stupid blue and green Nike uniforms.
NAMES on the bibs would have helped. Any vid of Cooper running a 400?

1:47.58 to win the boys 800 at Brooks PR. Came back from a 20 meter gap with 200 to go and dominated that last 150. Really impressed with his pacing and racing tactics for being a freshman.
What is the world record for 15 year olds? The HS record is going down.
Have to wonder what kind of mile time he could run with 1:47 800 speed.
Do not refer to a 15-year old as a "MF." What is wrong with you and letsrun.com??? The OP should be banned for life.

O.K. I see thread title has been corrected. Good call.

Well, the Brojos think making baseless doping accusations against 15 year old children is perfectly fine, so I doubt if they have any problems with that.
Crazy to think this thread already shows up on the first page of Google results for a child's name and it doesn't concern the Brojos or their virtuous moderators what is said in it. Surely it's only a matter of time before they get sued by a young athlete's parents?
Since Amos was busted for doping after he ran 1:41 again, it's no stretch to think that he was doping when he first ran it. He could not have been that old in 2012 to do it again in 2019 (1:41.89), after nearly doing it in 2018 (1:42.14) and still run 1:42.91 in 2021 and even 1:44 in 2022 before being caught doping. Prior to 2012, he had very few performances on IAAF, 2:25 1k and 8:33 3k in 2010, 1:47 800m in 2011. He ran 45.94 in 2012 and has no times listed on IAAF prior to that. I'd guess that he was already 19 or 20 in 2012, which would make him 26 or 27 when he ran 1:41 again, and 28 or 29 when he ran 1:42 last and declined a bit at 29 or 30 before the ban.

A 15yo with 47.3 speed just ran 1:47.5 and the first thing you wonder is what kind of miler he could be lmao
This kid is the best pure 800 talent since Brazier, I hope his coaches can limit the mileage and keep him happy and motivated so he can continues to develop over his high school career
well, some coach may come along with the idea to train him like a miler
47 147 and soon 21x, before age 16,
that is one rare bird. with that kind of long sprinter strength.
i'd keep the training significantly under the max, keep on doing what he's doing, and see what the progress is.
if the guy hits 45 in the 400, with natural strength. that is a 141 guy.
i would not go the andrew wheating, robby andrews, etc. route and get carried away with the higher volume distance stuff.
if he had metals in the 800 in the bank, and a trial 1500 turned out well, sure the rarest of birds can double (without PEDS), with PEDs, no problem, an 800 guy with EPO, can jump right in there, just as a 100 200 guy with EPO can dominate 400.
with a Coe, doubling was possible because the guy was capable of 139 and 324,
and never hit either because he did not max his speed, nor his aerobic, in the middle he had the rarest combination, and maximized / compromised to great result,
trying to get stoked about this kid, but its kinda hard
just look at him. overly physically developed for his age - looks like a senior
expect stagnation and underwhelming results from hereon
I'd never seen the kid before, fire up the race video, first thought I had was "He looks like a senior!" Whether he turns out to be the greatest 800 runner in history or burns out completely, reality doesn't change. He definitely looks very developed for his age, IMHO.
He played multiple sports throughout MS--cross country, football, basketball, and track. He started to train with his brother after the completion of his MS season in April last year.
Here was his progression in May and June last year:
1:56.2 time trial
1:56.20 TTFCA Meet of Champions
1:54.20 Brooks PR Invite Junior 800m
1:53.59 Nike Outdoor Nationals Junior 800m (ran 48.70 on the day between 800m races)
----------
This is his first year running year round. Mileage is low 20-25 mpw. He's only 15 years old, as has been discussed multiple times. He qualified for the Texas State 5A XC Meet and finished 47th.
He's very talented (duh), but very disciplined with the little things, that are really the big things. Recovery, nutrition, hydration, rest, etc.
That's the explanation offered for every stand-out achievement. It makes you wonder why so many other runners don't follow that simple formula for "good living". As for 25mpw - what can I say? Bannister would be impressed. Is there an arc trainer in there somewhere?
Because he is genetically a beast. I have been curious for a while when parents will use gene doping for advantage. If you do it when they are young it is literally impossible to know without the reciepts.
