I was called out for writing "there are better exercises for the legs for runners than squats."
I've looked into it in more detail and I think I was wrong. Studies show that the squat is one of the best leg exercises for runners.
And yet, I've talked to many masters world champions about their crosstraining and barbell squats seldom came up.
I wondered what do other competitive masters think about the squat? To find out, I posted a poll on Masters Track and Field group on Facebook.
These masters have been racing at a high level for years or even decades. If the barbell squat was a clearly superior exercise over the long term, it would be their favorite leg exercise, right?
I didn't want to skew the poll results by mentioning the barbell squat specifically. However, I did list first so it would be highly visible. I then asked what was their favorite leg exercise.
With 140 replies to the poll so far, the results are:
19% Bulgarian Squats
10% Hex Bar Squats
9% (Tie) Bench Step Ups, Leg Press, Barbell Squats, Hamstring Curls
7% Romanian Dead Lifts
6% Goblet squats
All or most of the above: 9%
These are masters runners, the majority of whom have years or decades of running experience. If the barbell squat is the best leg exercise, why aren't more elite masters runners doing it?
My guess is that it's a result of previous back injuries. Whether that's from lifting grocery bags the wrong way or from weightlifting, I don't know.
As others have pointed out, the barbell squat is an easy exercise to get wrong, especially when done very heavy. You can't see your own back. You can't see if your form is breaking down on the last heavy lift. OP, you should probably find a spotter at the gym who is knowledgeable of proper technique and have him/her point out your form flaws.
That's a good idea for all lifts.
