By and large it is a term used to justify racist policies against white people that primarily impacts poor whites.
No it's not. The fact that you see policies that benefit minorities as racist policies against whites, shows an extreme level of ignorance. If a minority benefits a white doesn't suffer. It isn't a zero sum game.
Depends on what policy you are talking about, but in general that is just wrong. In any system with finite resources, you are in zero-sum. Changing a rule to someone's benefit, will not get you out of zero-sum.
Back when certain ethnic groups immigrated to the US around WWII and before they were shunned because of their ethnic backgrounds. If they weren’t WASPs or German or English etc and couldn’t speak English they were denied jobs and made fun of. And yes they were white. Did they create a stink and protest and make demands? No. They grabbed whatever (sometimes multiple) jobs they could and made do for their families. There was no white privilege. Now it’s the reverse. If you’re black and especially a female or Hispanic you will get chosen over whites with similar or better credentials so the schools and companies can meet their diversity quotas. Been there - saw it all. Stop complaining about Bs called white privilege. That went away long time ago

It is any time that there is a finite number of positions available or a project is being awarded based upon metrics beyond merit or price.
Your assumption that the white person is automatically more meritorious is pretty dumb

So would agree that depriving minorities of equal rights for the first 200 years of the country’s existence created in imbalance in favor of whites. In other words a privilege, a white privilege.

A white person not understanding white privilege is similar to a young, tall, good looking man not understanding the advantages they get in life just for being tall and good looking.
This is correct--the real world is like HS. Whites are also more likely to get out of traffic stops.
I’m as white as they come. What white privilege do I have?
Basically it works like this: if you are a straight white man, it is harder for you to get into college and/or get a job then it is if you are something else. This means that in order for you to thrive, you will have to be smarter, harder working, or more creative than you gay, black/brown, and female peers. This is a disadvantage at first, at least while the system is rigged against you. But then capitalism kicks in and the fact that you had to train yourself to be smarter, harder working, and more creative will allow you to separate yourself from the field.
The current system is great for SMART/TALENTED straight white men, but not so great if you are a DUMB/TALENTLESS straight white man because nobody will come to help you out.
On the other hand, the system sucks for SMART/TALENTED gay, black/brown, or female people. This is because it artificially props them up through the end of college and into their first entry-level job. It is great for DUMB/TALENTLESS gay, black/brown, or female people because will be given help because society sees them as victims.

What rights did someone black not have in 1976?
Ok 192 years. But the 170 years before 1776 wasn’t a picnic.

Anyone that denies the path to the Good Ol' Boys Club has the least resistance for people from Caucasia is just oblivious. The C Suite is notoriously conservative. Not racist, but damn right expects people to look a certain way. This will change in a couple 100 more years.

Equality is a zero sum game.
No it isn’t. Equality is the opposite of a zero some game. There’s an unlimited amount of equality.
A Nigerian family, an Albanian family, a Taiwanese family, all immigrate to the US in 2023. Does the Albanian family enjoy privilege based on their color?
I wrote this for the following reason. My son's good friend is a freshman at NYU. In class he was told he has white privilege and doesn't know what it's like to be an immigrant. I guess they're not used to seeing blonde Muslims and figured that he's just a spoiled rich business major. He replied that his relatives were killed indiscriminately and that his mother fled Albania and raised him and his sister by herself in a 1 bedroom apartment. He also said if you told her this she'd probably hit you. Apparently, he was reprimanded for that remark by the professor and school.
Anyway there are many immigrants of color that have more wealth than white people.
While that Albanian family went through a lot of adversities, I assume none of them were based on race or skin color.
A Nigerian family or a Taiwanese family may have fewer adversities overall, but they have race-related adversities that the Albanian family does not have to experience.
Of course the professor should not have reprimanded him, but rather used it as a teaching moment to explain there are many reasons people might have privilege and race is only one of them.

“For example, in the United States, Nigerian-Americans are among the most successful immigrant groups, topping the charts in a wide array of fields. According to the Washington-based (MPI), Nigerians in the United States are the most educated immigrant group, with 61 percent holding at least a bachelor’s degree, “compared with 31 percent of the total foreign-born population and 32 percent of the US-born population.”
