Also a shout-out to Alex Maier (fastest 3k last lap). If you’d told me before he’d outscore Habtom Samuel and be just 1 pt shy of Ky Robinson I definitely would have thought those guys had a fall/scratched the 3K.
Back to back 3:59 1600 closes. Last mile of his 5k and 3k would've been All-American in the open mile, no? Maybe would've won it?
Eh, I think he would have definitely had a chance but I think I still take the Washington dudes over him in a mile.
Check out the closing splits of his 5k and compare them to the splits of the open mile.
Last 800: 1:53.44 vs 1:54.43
Last 600: 1:23.25 vs 1:22.86
Last 400: 54.28 vs 54.39
Last 200: 26.82 vs 27.29
The difference is Houser had a 2:08 809m (2:38/k) in his legs, while Nico had an 11:30 4200m (2:45/k) in his.
To put it another way: if Nico ran 3400m of the 5k, then immediately hopped into the mile, they would've had nearly identical splits to the finish (and Nico's last mile was actually 4:01-low, a bit faster than the winning time).
Obviously not this site’s bread and butter but just noticed that Rachel Glenn of Arkansas jumped 2.00 to win the HJ, tying the Collegiate Record. That puts her tied for #3 in the world this year behind only Mahuchikh and Olyslagers, and would have won World Indoors.

Murphy closed faster. But Maier was very impressive this weekend, although not terribly surprising for a 13:11 man who was 2nd in the 10k and 5th in XC in 2022. Good return to form for him though.
