If say, Nathan Green from UW (3:36, 3:52y and the same age as Kessler), had just done this - the boards would be equally or more greatly hyped. Sure, it's February but this is a great sign that Hobbs' high talent is continuing to progress.
To be fair, Green hasn’t run 3:32 like Hobbs has. So him running 3:33 and calmly holding off Wightman would be the greater breakthrough. He did run at the meet though, but he just ran a meh 1000. Until he can train more, it’s hard to get too high on his ceiling personally. Low-mileage you can run really fast (see: Elliot Giles), but it’s less easy to see you managing the rounds globally.
But if you look at the confident body language within the race itself, there is a difference, no all over the pace, no getting boxed. not afraid to move once and to the wire....all signs that he most likely, most likely, a different guy. Just my view.
That's exactly how I saw it. From gun to tape, Kessler looked like he knew he was the man.
I don't understand why people are exaggerating the significance of this one, early season race? Wightman has certainly proved he's still a big dog who had some fun at the dog park this weekend.
Like you I dont think I have overstated it.
i was pretty sure he would run well. But training dorsnt always predict what happens when the gun goes off. I dont even make the beating of Wightman a big deal.
Things happen from races like this , some of them are very physiological in nature. I doubt the Kessler even knows the trials of Wightman lol, all he does know is its for sure the best guy he ever beat no matter the circumstances.
And for sure , I think that he looked a bit different this year. It is one only , but naybe a building block?
Still, a shame he didn't run for NAU. That team would have been incredible and we can see that Smith can coach the 800/1500. Nico Young didn't run a 3:34 in high school like Hobbs--faster than the college record at the time! But he is probably ready to run 3:48-49, like Hobbs. Of course, Hobbs is still just 20.
This was an outstanding race for Wightman. He closed very well, 26, in a 3:34, and this was his first race in a year. He's had a lot of injury problems since his World Championship. He may be in as good shape now as he has ever been indoors, so it is a very good sign for him this summer. Same with Hobbs, whose confidence and tactics look to be much improved. Really good to hear him talking about sticking to Nuguse in a sub-3:47 mile attempt.
Watching Kessler run with confidence is evidence to me that he is realizing his capabilities and starting to show himself that he is to be reckoned with and will keep improving. It’s like night/day seeing confidence in that kick and delivering the win. This will be a breakout year for Kessler, and I really hope he goes to Paris and makes the finals.
What goes on between the ears is often as important or more important than the physical capabilities.

a great start indoors, which hasn't been the case his first 2 years as a pro. but he has to ready on the day for the trials. his last 100 in championship style races have been disappointing to say the least. I'm happy he is running US indoors to get some practice with the best us runners.
Dear sir, you know who I am right? I'm telling with no uncertain terms that Hobbs Kessler is right now MY MAN listening to MY ADVICE albeit furtively and secretly!!!
I can tell from just ONE LOOK at his performance between this January 2024 and last January in 2023 that the only significant difference in his preparation is his abiding faith in my advice to disuse, avoid, switch off all anthropogenic RF and EMF devices and exposure thus giving his nervous system the ability to perform in a race much better.
You wanna bet with me??? Just wait and see, Hobbs Kessler, under my specific advice and guidance regarding anthropogenic RF and EMF exposure will run at least 3:29 this season. Mark my words. He could even me in the hunt for a medal in Paris, it's quite possible if he obeys me to the letter!!!

Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You also find such a stark contrast with Hobbs Kessler this season in 2024 compared to 2022 and 2023 right??? And did you ever seriously question why????
DUH!!! It's because he took onboard NEW ADVICE FROM ME, an RF King, to disuse, avoid, decommission, switch off all anthropogenic RF and EMF exposure and devices in the training season. His nervous system is now completely rejuvenated and being still so young he will recover and respond very well to my advice!!!!
Hobbs has an ace up his sleeve right now, and that ace IS ME, KHAMIS!!! BECAUSE OF ME, HE SHALL ASCEND TO THE TOP OF THE PODIUM!!! It's nothing to do with training, never was. Hobbs isn't doing some rocket training, he also isn't doing astronomical volume or intensity like Cam Levins or Kelvin Kiptum, he is just training as per normal as every average high-performer does, but with 1 difference that is RF and EMF related! Hobbs is indeed training smart MY WAY!!!

Nico Young is never running 3:48 .. I am a little surprised at you.Grant Fisher cannot either, as an example That mile people keep referring to is maybe 3-4 secs tops conversion for him as a 3 year altitude adjusted guy. Hobbs can probably beat him at 3K as well. He ran 7:39 in no man's land at 19 last year. Pretty sure he could run 7:33 or so now, and he is just faster than Nico Young. Nico does not have his underside or wheels at any distance below 5K .I am surprised at a poster like you does not see all of this. Hobbs has not even run 3:48/9, and you think Nico Young is the miler he is? That's an absurd premise.
when people use swear words they usually don't mean them literally. he is not inferring mr kessler to be engaging in sexual relationships with mothers.
When people use sh*t (a natural bodily function) they don't mean it literally, as either a noun and a verb, but letsrun bans sh*t anyway. Thanks for playing...
World indoors for Hobbs? Solid time trial performance. I want to see his improvement in a race with nuances and strategies.
He has to beat all but one of Yared, Cole, Coop and the rest of the US qualifiers in Albuquerque on Feb 17 to go. I think Hobbs has done an altitude stint there already, and it will be interesting to see how that effects the Blacksburg bois
Evidence isn’t scant at all. Hobbs ran 3:34 at 18 with less than 2 years of serious training.
Hobbs is faster at age 20 than everyone on that list you named.
Right as I said the evidence is scant. Kessler certainly hasn’t taken a big leap from what he did as an 18 year old. Let us see if he continues to improve. He will be 21 in a few weeks.
Do we think Hocker goes 1500 or 3k at USAs? Because that is a serious dogfight if Nuguse, Hocker and Kessler all are going for it. Hocker of course looked awesome at the longer distance today and is even better the slower it goes.
