i suspect she trains with Mike Smith pros. Elly, Hannah, Rachel - she says she wants to do more 1500's. there's no better training partner for that than Nicki Hiltz.
Mike Smith isn’t taking on any new pros.
His hands are full, has a young family, great success with NAU. He may even step away from coaching pros after Paris.
She will be able to train with who she likes (even Mike Smith athletes) on easy days and will have her university coach providing the key workouts on hard days.
Good set up for her.
Good set up if you want 12th at the world championships. If you want to have a chance at a medal it’s a bad choice
This is true. And neither of them will ever be good enough to make a global team. But they sure do draw attention.
I don't get this. Both Tuohy and Valby are faster now than Monson, Cranny and Schweitzer were at that age. Why is it assumed that Valby and Tuohy will not similarly improve as pros?
Nothing is guaranteed, but it's reasonable to think that Tuohy and Valby will have some future window of pro success.
this is always the question I have when Everyone on these boards say neither Valby or Touhy will make it…
both these current girls are faster than the older 3 at the same age.. they got substantially faster as a pro, why are we assuming Touhy and Valby will fall flat?
And do these same people also remember that Schweizer win NCAA XC has a junior and then went in to finish out of the top 10 as a senior, But yet Schweizer has been successful as a pro…. so there is no reason to think Touhy or Valby can’t do become successful and make a successful jump into the pros
You are correct that Tuohy is unlikely to junp to another level as Schweizer, Monson, Frerichs, Coburn and almost every elite American came from very low mileage in HS and relative obscurity. The women like Cain, Ping, Effraimson, Lane and other phenoms, all fizzled out. Valby is following the path of Schweizer and Monson closely. Her upside is unlimited. At least Tuohy got a nice contract before completely falling off. She seems to be on a path similar to Drew Hunter and Effraimson getting nice long term contracts that don't end up helping the sponsors.

An American woman has never medalled in a 5k ever. Why are we acting like 12th at Worlds is a bad result for any american woman? If Katelyn Tuohy has a similar career to someone like Cranny (13th, 9th and 9th at the last three global championships at 5k), then she has had a great career.

This school year is the last time, most likely, K Tuohy will finish top three in a big race. K T is just going to allow P Valby to win NCAA outdoor 5000m without a challenge? Defeating P Valby, outdoor NCAA 5000m final, K T's ... . Anyway, is she happy?
I would rather swing big for the Olympics if I thought there was a chance, even an off one, rather than focus on winning an event I’ve already won. Going pro will give her the focus, resources and freedom to give her best shot at the trials 5000. Katelyn clearly has her priorities straight here.
Adidas now has access to the whole story of hs, college, pro?, total fitness x training, the forward lean and pony tail icon. Question is, will they actually do something with it, or just keep her in the adidas stable of athletes?
Given the 'Tuohy Story', I highly doubt she left any money on the table now vs signing the day after 8:35.
Also of note, this is the case of NIL expiring 12/31/23 rolling right into the official pro contract. I think this will end up being the standard.
i have been wondering if her stock has changed at all since she reached some of her peak performances. Clearly the last couple seasons haven’t been her best in terms of winning titles. But, I don’t think her results indicate she’s getting any slower. Seems more just that her competition is stiffer—and maybe KT has some areas she can improve with race strategy/mental readiness.
overall I think brands still see value in KT and I doubt her stock dropped anything since she won 22 NCAA XC
I agree that I could see her having a similar vision to drew Hunter where she ends up creating her own training group & brand. She is intelligent & has a business degree & strong leadership skills & likely landed a lucrative deal where she can invest in her own brand. She hasn’t named a coach yet so maybe she will stick with coach henes program through the Olympic year and then make a coaching change? she has stagnated in the last two seasons but I want to believe that once the academic load is taken off and she has more flexibility with her training schedule & time for rest, she will see big improvement

There is nothing to prove KT will end up like Drew Hunter.
i would say she is following a much similar track to Grant Fisher, a high school star who battled in the NCAA, won some, lost many… and ultimately became an excellent pro and is among the greatest Americans to ever do it.
