No respect for Dave Smith and Oklahoma State men’s cross country team

I’m sure I would still walk you. 24 years old and I am very jealous of guys older than me still competing, but it’s legal for them do to so. I’m rooting for Dave Smith because of cry babies like you. I’m also rooting for Mike Smith because I competed against his guys frequently- the white foreigners you don’t get mad about, you racist.

Age isn’t an excuse anymore in the NCAA the fact is- you’re complaining about something so meaningless. You’re mad coaches have the resources to recruit and have a positive impact on young adults from around the world? Keep crying.

It is very obvious there was a typo with Denis Kipngetich world athletics profile. Usually, Kenyan male names always start with KIP and not KIN and women is either CHEP or JEP, there are 3 athletes, born 1999, 2001 and 2003. The 2003 guy link has Kenya cross-country meet where Denis was third (OSU profile states that too) and also personal best of 13:43, the 1999 guy is a 400m and 800m and 2001 guy is more of a steeple and road race guy. We can hate all we want but the fact will remain the same. Brian Masau was only a 3:50/13:52 guy nothing crazy but when you give this guy's opportunity and resources to train with then you will be shocked how good get in a short period. Dave deleting Denis age at his Okstate profile is absurd and not true. I bet you Valby nor Touhy are not losing sleepless nights over Doris and other Kenyans. It is always the distance group that are crybabies about this lame African shiet. Race play a bigger role in here. Otherwise, I think this will be a great match-up between two great teams (NAU vs OSU) and individually between Valby, Touhy and Doris

This thread is not about age tho. This thread is about a program and a coach in Dave Smith who has a legacy of developing American talent through hard work. Guys like Ryan Vale, Colby Lowe, Alex Maire and Isai Rodriguez went through that program and development into some of the very best in the NCAA. Sadly it seems like this great program and coach are turning to the dark side. Rather than developing talent it seems like now they’re focusing on importing all their runners from Kenya, Morocco, Ethiopia etc. There is nothing illegal about this, Dave Smith is not breaking any rules but it does take the prestige of a great coach. He seems so hungry for a national title that he’s willing to replace all his American recruits with ready made internationals. That’s just lazy and desperate. This is now many people feel while others feel it’s ok. For me personally it saddens me because I was always a big fan of Dave Smith because he won the right way. His guys were alway blue collar runners, tough, hard workers. Dave Smith was always a blue collar coach and I loved this about him. Now I’m not so sure any more. Dave is still winning the right way. Kang of NAU is a 23 year old junior....so he was also a 21 year old freshman at one point. NAU's top 5 has a higher average age than OSU's right now.

Mike Smith has been carried by internationals for his entire career at NAU. How blue collar are the NAU guys? Nico Young and the Sahlmans are from EXTREMELY WEALTHY families.

You can't understate the importance of the NAU altitude advantage. If you think OSU deserves an asterisk for Dave using 4 international athletes relative to Mike's 3 foreigners, then NAU deserves an asterisk for all their championships for being at altitude.

I'd say the same is true of the new New Mexico team. It's garbage to be able to bring in a whole new team of African recruits. There is absolutely no reason to have foreign students on scholarship. Any of that money should be going into New Mexican students or at the very least Americans. Why pour resources into someone who legally cannot stay in the country following graduation? But then it's hard to argue that its ever about academics. Would love to see the majors and GPA posted, but that'll never happen.

who cares college is a total scam anyway. good for anyone who gets a free ride & gets to compete at the national level - being in the mix at the front of d1 would be a great experience, regardless of which random state you are in, because nobody, especially someone from an entirely different continent, is really going to care what state their school is in - they're looking at the program, facilities, academics etc... not the fkin state. lol.

I don’t mind that you support a distance team composed of International runners, it’s your opinion and nothing wrong with that. But if you are going to compare two teams at least be accurate. Dave Smith used 5 foreigners while NAU used 2 at regionals. Overall on their distance squads NAU has a total of 3 while OSU has 13.

most of those international athletes were slower than Nico and Sahlman when they joined OSU. If he wants to recruit international athletes that are slower than the top americans, go for it.

The REAL reason why you are crying, however, is that Dave develops his athletes better than Mike Smith does. Now those international athletes are beating NAU's Americans despite those Americans starting off with better PRs.

Basically, Dave Smith saw that even at home in the most favorable conditions, with all his appeals, he couldn't beat NAU. So, he got back on the international recruiting train, found three additional African-born athletes who were really good already, and signed them to get his championship, despite the fact that he can recruit and develop very good American athletes of whatever race. Why go for the risky, long-term proposition, thought Dave, when you can buy a championship right now?

Mike Smith also gets foreign athletes, for sure, but he develops them in most cases from non-varsity athletes to NCAA all-Americans over the years and he counts on a lot of American runners, almost all of whom he brought to that level. He got Las Heras as a transfer this year and Nico was almost this good as a freshman by March but Nyoak didn't even make top 7 in any major races until this year. Same with many of his American runners. Nur had a sort of gap year to qualify academically and then became great only in his junior year. Prosser wasn't top 7 until last year and finished 18th at NCAAs. He has patience. Many of his top recruits don't even contribute for years. Colin Sahlman will not have contributed any points at Nationals in his first two years of xc. Aaron Sahlman barely competed after injury in the spring. There are other roster-filler guys who had storied hs careers.

Guadie was a 28:23 or 28:17 guy already. Kipngetich was third at Kenyan xc nationals this year. Musau didn't have strong times but he was on Kenya's U18 national team for U18 African Champs this year and given how he STARTED the season first at, I think, Chili Pepper, he was obviously already really good. Messaoudi was already a 3:38 guy.
