Her videos are ridiculous. She had to sit on the stationary bike for 3 hours before she left? After 20 something hours of exhausting travel she felt compelled to go for a run in the pitch dark by herself? Her whole video is running and hiking. That is what compulsion looks like. "Recovery" clearly is not going very well for her.
As a side note it kind of pisses me off that she is sponsored by some "healthy" "alternate" "high protein low carb" cereal brand. She packs 2 little baggies of her special "healthy" cereal so that she will always have a healthy snack. Seriously? Think of all the women her age who are packing little snack baggies with cheerios for their own children, and here Allie O needs to have her safety blanket of low-carb protein puffs before she flies across the world.
IMO it is beyond irresponsible for this company to use her to advertise their "clean healthy" cereal. They know who follows Allie, they know she is a magnent for orthorexic runner chicks. Someone who is really recovering from an ED should be learning to eat the normal cheerios, not the "healthy low carb high protein" alternative. Really its insufferable to see her spend hours in the mountains and then advocate a low carb product.
If Allie cares about competative running, first and foremost she needs to put on some weight. Good luck taking on a big mountain race (let alone the masochistic training) with that body frame. She needs to start pounding the carbs, pounding the protein. Then she would actually have the energy for high-quality training efforts. SHe spends so much time cross training to reduce injury risk? Here is a novel idea, to reduce your risk of injury you could fuel your body. Give your body the pieces it needs to rebuild itself. Then don't overtrain. its not rocket science.
I know this might sound like a wild rant, but honestly im just really fed up with the influence that someone like Allie Ostrander has on the sport. Her nonstop "sadfishing" and narsicistic dramatic exposition (and simultaneous denial) of her OBVIOUS problems is NOT GOOD for her followers. I am worried about the 13-14-15 year old girls new to running who loook to her as a role-model or an authoritative voice in the sport. Common. We need some role models in womens running who portray a healthy example that is worthy of emulation, not simply examples of victimhood and oppression.
They’re all self absorbed. They complain about disordered eating and mental issues yet routinely post videos and content on how amazing they are. I always think, well they can’t be that self-conscious. Maybe that’s the problem. Enjoy life and get off the internet
The eating disorder 'recovery' community online, in youtube/twitter/instagram, is an absolute hellscape. I would advise anybody who is serious about wanting to get better to stay well away. It's crabs in a bucket, and I really hope she doesn't get dragged into it.
It's funny that there are people who find AllieO to be unlikeable. I've watched her videos for probably a year or so, and it never crossed my mind to think of her as (name your accusation: narcissistic, imbalanced, immature).
Admittedly, I don't set a terribly high bar or go through her videos with a fine-tooth comb, but nothing much has stood out in a bad way.
I do remember when she put up her very first videos, when she was making pancakes in the kitchen with the brooks beasts team, that it struck me as phoney baloney, that a very obviously emaciated person was putting on a show about thinking pancakes are fun. I mean, it's possible that it wasn't intentionally fake or deceptive, but i honestly didn't give her channel any more of my time for a while, just with the perceived discrepancy there.
I DO want to say that I love athletes who have a real appearance, without eyelash extensions or extensive make-up. Allie O is a total ten as far as showing herself on camera without eyelash extensions, hair extensions, or clothing designed to make her look glamorous. Molly Huddle also fits the bill. Elise Cranny also fits the bill. Des Linden had a natural look. That's a bit off-topic, but it's nice to know that there are still runners that aren't trying to be gorgeous or glamorous!
Oh no! Nobody is paying attention to me anymore… better manufacture something related to victimhood or trauma and, like, the courage in dealing with it quick!!
90% of this thread is just angry nobodies who willingly watch every second of Allie's videos complaining about how nobody should watch her videos because they are so bitter about her life being "better" than theirs even though she is willing to admit to not being perfectly healthy mentally. And their logic is if she genuinely was in a bad space mentally and not just milking social media for likes than she shouldnt admit to being in a bad space mentally. Because making your issues public only means you dont actually have issues.
This whole web site is a case study in resentful incel denial psychology and anonymous jack assess pretending they are doctors. Go look in the mirror people. Clearly you should be focusing on your own issues and not lecturing someone else about theirs. Oh and Allie thanks you all for hate promotion of the algorithm...

No one is paying attention to her anymore? There’s a forum full of dweebs here (including the two of us apparently) who were clearly chomping at the bit to discuss her. She didn’t even race; she just posted to Insta. And look at this thread. She moves the needle. Get over yourself, bro.

Isn't it time for this young lady to move on to a normal career? She just isn't pro runner material in terms of making a living. Very few are. Its a struggle for all but the very best and she is not a international elite.

Unfortunately it is really difficult for those that crave attention to simply slip back to obscurity. Look how many has been celebrities appear on reality tv, cooking, ice skating, sewing, singing, literally anything to in their mind stay relevant.
I don’t fault you for believing that 90% of head cases are female… after all, 90% of those who vocalize are indeed female. After all, they share feelings better. How many dudes just totally flame out and never say out loud that “it was a mental thing” though? Probably s*itloads. I’ve coached both genders and think that the “mental issues” holding athletes back are evenly dispersed tbh.

Personally, I think Allie is awesome. I hadn't watched much of her YouTube videos until I came across this thread. I don't understand where all this hate and judgement is coming from based on her channel. Let her do her thing, especially if this is what she's committed to doing as part of her recovery.
I imagine her recovery is going to be a long road. From what I can tell, Allie is a passionate individual trying to figure out how to continue to do the thing she loves while also managing her ED. But, she's only 26 and isn't always going to get things right the first or even second time. Especially if she isn't surrounded in a village of people dedicated and educated on how to best support her. And, based on what I have seen, I think she could use a coaching change at minimum. Of course, this is coming from someone very much outside the know of who her coach is and only having watched a few minutes of social media content, but something doesn't seem right. I feel as though a coach would try to limit the lengthy cross training sessions while she is injured, for example. But again, I don't know him or their coaching dynamic.
I appreciate her voice and education on how pervasive ED is in this sport. I think it is important that young people hear it. And, I hope she finds the balance she needs to be successful.
