Dude, wake up. Based on their published comments Rob Conner, Jerry Schumacher and Mike Smith absolutely love this guy. They're three of the top five coaches in the NCAA.
Who moves across the country for a 55k position? This guy got hired because he was there.
An administrative assistant in an athletic department makes more than this, with any reasonable seniority.
I think you are correct. This is a convenience hire. It was probably him or the local high school coach, and the AD went the wrong way on that decision.
Honest opinion? This is a terrible hire. Smart guy, if you only count the number of books read per month. Socially awkward, terrible leadership qualities, experimental to the detriment of his athletes, his twitter account is an embarrassment to all who know him & he literally fails to complete anything he has ever started (apart from a very fluffy degree).
In his defence, he needed a proper job, PSU aren’t a title contender, nobody else wanted the job for low pay.
what is the deal with all the posters hating on college coaches? Maybe for sprints, hurdles, jumps. But a distance coach is a figurehead. All but maybe the very top few of them.
All the really top athletes know what they are doing. The only role of the coach is to offer another perspective than the runner's own. It can even be someone who never ran, like Brother Colm.
They just have to stand there and say "stop, go, relax, looking good" etc etc. And recruit a team, maybe.
It's genuinely remarkable the way you manage to come up with the dumbest take on every possible topic

This is a fair and accurate assessment. Good for him for getting a job with a paycheck.
Jerry Schumacher, Head Coach at the University of Oregon and Bowerman Track Club: "I've known Jonathan for a long time. He is hard-working, knowledgeable, and passionate about the sport. His roots are in the city of Portland, and he cares deeply about the student-athletes he works with. I'm excited to see him lead this program into the future."
Jerry is still trolling Alberto. Oh, this guy is a buddy of Steve Magness? Sure, I'll give you a good quote about him!
Because the people who consistently post negative things on here are the ultimate running fan nerds, who are know-it-all’s, extremely petty, and make the constant error of confusing opinion with facts (that they don’t and never will know).
You basically just described Marcus and the outcry over his hiring. He is the epitome of all this. He did the most letsrun thing and accused our current 1500m champ of doping without evidence. It’s like the letsrun board took the form of a person and was just hired to coach at Portland State.
No, you're projecting.
Bottom line, if you have gripes about some college coach, you yourself are in the gutter. Because face it, no college needs a great distance coach.
The bar is that low, and here you are playing limbo to go even lower!

I believe it's fair to say that Marcus has buttered his bread as a podcaster/internet commentator/sideways letsrun troll (not a good poster, now makes veiled critical references to "internet forums..." [so subtle].
His career isn't built on his success as a coach. Based on all the above, I think it's perfectly fair to criticize Marcus...especially since he is the first person to make critical remarks... sometimes directly, but sometimes he also giggles and puts the verbal equivalent of "air quotes" on "some coaches," or "some pros." Not classy.
All of that being said, as a fellow idiot, I hope Marcus has success in the coming year.
