I thought for sure Watcke had that 800m. To get nipped at the line. Bummer! I bet Watcke didn't even see that coming, he's another Oregon recruit for next year.

What's with runners not leaning? It's a freaking national championship race. Is it going to kill you to lean?
He obviously didn't learn anything from Ince leaning and winning the girls 800 by .01 .
Is matsatsa gonna be racing again this year? looks like that 800m HSR is set to stay for another decade at least
Uh, why? Weird assumption when 2 were so close just last year. New talent keeps coming all the time.
definitely. There are a couple of sub 1:49 Juniors this year in Tyler Mathews of Arizona and Patrick Hilby of Illinois, plus super talented Xai Ricks who is also sub 1:50. There's also a Freshman from Montana in Wilson Schmidt who has run 1:51.3 already.

Guess what folks? It pays to lean!
well, in his defense, I think this is only the 2nd time he's been beaten in the last 3 years?? in the 800m. (correct me if I'm wrong, I'll have to look it up) Srsly though, he won the state meet his sophomore year, got 2nd his junior year (I think that was the only other time), and then won his senior year, so I don't think Watcke is used to having to lean. If you watch the races he won at the IL State meet, he didn't have to lean b/c it wasn't that close.
Watcke's prob kicking himself that he didn't lean. He has a lot of race smarts, imo, but he doesn't get competition in the 800 unless he goes to these national meets. So, time for him to move up to the Div 1! This is a great recruit for Oregon.

Forgot about ricks. Yeah, I he probably has the best chance out of any of these guys.
As for the others... I highly doubt any of them will get it or even come close. Guys like that go through the high school system every 4 years. Remembers Brandon Miller? At least he found success at the pro level. Most weren't so lucky.
For some reason, the 800 is an event where people can run times seemingly beyond their abilities that they can never replicate again. I see it every year at every level - I hear about sophomores splitting 1:51 who never touch 1:53 again. Zavon Watkins - 1:47.99 split as a freshman. I think he broke 1:50 like once his senior year. List goes on. The 800 is an extraordinarily unpredictable event, and trying to apply normal progression and improvement to it is impossible.

He was 3rd at New Balance Indoors this year. 3rd at US Juniors last summer. But I get your point.

Yeah but you said a decade. I happen to know this nine year old who’s been hitting some crazy workouts.
Same with Nike Outdoor Nationals. That means we get the epic HS mile showdown we’ve been waiting for. I don’t know why there are so many free streams lately but I’m certainly here for it. Good for the sport.
It's the shoe companies that deserve the credit for this. They want their meet shown live for free to as many people as possible. It's the same thing for a few other major meets during the season. They require that their meets are not placed behind a Runnerpsace or Flosmack paywall.
She's really good but Mia was close and only a junior.
very true, Mia is very good and a huge prospect. Jackson has the #4 time on the US pro list and i'm not even sure the 100 is her best event long term. She has 400 strength and her 22.70 200 was ran in a race where she won by over 2.5 seconds. She can bring that down a few more tenths if she does that at U-20's i think.
