Remember when Klecker did the same thing a couple years ago after a 1500? Throwing his spikes and yelling on the infield. Baby didn’t get his way again!
This. Klecker’s mad that he’s not that good. BTC and former BTC athletes own him. Nuguse has supplanted him as the alpha of OAC. He’s the second best runner in his marriage. Joe is frustrated with being constantly overshadowed.
Yes I’m sure the reigning US 10000m champ is frustrated with being overshadowed
I am astonished at how many people are taking Klecker’s whiny side on this thread. It’s a damn race, not two buddies holding hands to a time. You can’t expect some guy in a different training group to take the lead and help you. Why would you help your competitor?
Yeah exactly. It's actually in Woody's best interest to have Klecker NOT run the standard. It's less competition for the team at the US champs. In my opinion Woody went above and beyond leading the last 800 for him.
He could have easily sat on Klecker for the whole race and just nipped under the standard with a classic 53 second Woody last lap. But instead he helped out for a bit.
Typical from OAC though. Very self-righteous. What's good for the sport is good for THEM, nevermind what anybody else thinks.
Lame of Klecker to have a fit but this wasn’t a real race with stakes, they should all be on the same team of trying to run a fast time and it’s lame of woody to just take advantage and not contribute to the effort
Nice sit and kick to win the most meaningless title, Woody
They are NOT on the same team. It only hurts Woody for Joe to run under the standard. If Joe does not have the standard, then Woody has one less person to worry about at US champs.

It wasn’t a race! It was a time trial to get the Olympic Standard and they both talked about it in that way. Woody thought he should get dragged the whole way and Joe thought they were working together to get it. In the post race Woody seemed sad to not get the standard because the pace slipped in the last 2K, like Joe was his pacer

Woody also doesn’t have the standard and said he came to this race specifically to get it
From 1:10 to about 1:17-18, Meb's ahead and Rupp is right on his shoulder. After that, Rupp breaks away. Before that, there were various leaders, Tyler Pennel, various guys, Rupp for some time. Rupp by no means was leading the race from 49 to 1:19 of the video.
Let's cut to brass tacks. When that gun fires, no one owes you a goddamned thing! Also, sh*t happens like clipping, shoving, falls, etc. It's racing. It is also why we get our butts handed to us in championship competition. Our boys, with a few exceptions, lack the cojones to mix it up. Nope, we just want our perfectly paced time trials with someone getting paid to do the heavy lifting and everything has to be just perfect.
Joe - you are a compensated professional athlete and this ain't your first rodeo. If you are in sub-27 shape, then freaking run a sub-27! Don't blame it on Woody for not helping. He is under no obligation to be your Cal Naughton, Jr. and set up "Shake and Bake" for you.
American male elites - if you have the chops to go sub-3:30 / sub-13:00 / sub-27:00, then run that pace and take the chance that you will get used and outkicked. There wasn't huge money or a team berth on the line so why employ this cagey gamesmanship bullsh*t and then complain that sh*t didn't go your way and you missed your goal? In some ways, I feel like I am watching a regression back to the 1990s.
If you had Woody’s world class kick you wouldn’t ever take the pace either. Compete and win. Times will follow.
So where was this "world class kick" in the Olympics? Woody's kick only seems to be effective in time-trial type events against lesser competition or against other Americans.
I can't wait to see him unleash his potent kick against Kiplimo and Cheptegei!

You are aware that there are two standards right? 27:10 for world champs, 27:00 for olympics.
Someone mentioned this (without a link) above but everyone seems to be blowing past it. Klecker has responded. It was about the clipping, not the sitting on him. I’d be pissed too:
I was mad after the race not because Woody wouldn’t take the lead, but that I was clipped from behind with 900 meters to go. My calf seized up and I was unsure if I’d be able to finish. Such is racing. Thanks to @sound_running for a great event.
Klecker fell off pace 10 laps before the finish and ran a last lap that was 8 seconds faster than goal-pace. He could have gotten his Oly qualifier and he didn't need Woody to do it.
From reports trackside, Klecker was putting on the brakes randomly rather than Kincaid speeding up behind him. Lots of whiny fanboys is all this is. Your attention will just be turned to the next shiny object dangled in front of you, so just hang in there for now!

It was a world athletics silver race. Woody got more points for finishing first. If Joe wanted a pacer he should have asked Olli to go longer.
You're probably the same kind of person complaining about "Bowerman time trials" ruining the sport.

Nuguse realizes he is too good for the OAC group and it is time for him to call BTC Jerry . KLecker crying and flapping his arms after the race is also a realization he can't out kick anyone on BTC and anyone in a controlled race with entries discouraging African entries . Klecker is past his prime .
Woody also doesn’t have the standard and said he came to this race specifically to get it

Yes, obviously. Woody said in the interview they came to go sub-27 and was disappointed not to get it because the pace slipped. Said at least they got the world standard

Right. There's less than zero incentive for Woody to help Klecker get either standard. Klecker is lucky that Woody decided to actually go for 27:10 in the last 800, or he would have missed both.

So do you know that Klecker and Woody spoke to each other about how to manage the race? Regardless of the goal for this race/time trial, if they didn’t mutually agree to a plan why would anybody expect anything to go a certain way? The plan was for Hoare to pace until 6K and then Klecker expected to be strong enough to solo the rest of the way to the standard. I doubt Klecker was counting on anybody to still be there or to help him. Count on Woody? That’s not how Woody generally does things. Seriously, it was a surprise that Woody was even up with Klecker. He’s usually out of contact and then blasts a crazy last 400 to win. He’s not a guy that helps “pace” time trials. Anyway, Klecker couldn’t do what he’s been training to do, and then to add insult to injury, Woody won the event, and then to make it a truly horrible night, Klecker had a temper tantrum afterwards. That’s the formula for turning a huge pr into a bummer. If Klecker was only mad about the clipping, c’mon….that’s just another day at work.

The incentive is to keep the pace up so he still has a chance to get the standard. Now neither of them have it. I feel like you must know this and are trolling
