I don't think Chmiel has pro aspirations. But she has been a terrific college runner. First team AA in the 10000, 5000, and 3000. Three time top ten finisher at XC nationals, including third.
Really the only time in high school that Tuohy seriously gapped Chmiel on the track in high school was when she set the 3200 record, and Chmiel had broken 10:00 in the same race the year before. The only other longer distance track race they ran against each other was the NB two mile when they were both exhausted due to running the relays all weekend which Tuohy won without it ever being in doubt, but not by a huge margin. Chmiel was better in track in high school then people remember, winning state titles and running well at NB. Tuohy was faster in the 1500 by the time she was in 8th grade and was faster in every distance by her sophomore year. But by then she was faster than everyone. Tuohy was faster than Chmiel in cross country by her sophomore year, but Kelsey was runner up at NXN twice and won the Great Edinburgh.
Again I don't know if Chmiel has any pro aspirations. But I think she is talented enough that she could give it a real go if she wanted to.
No one ‘has to go to grad school’ but if you have the talent…most professional jobs nowadays require some more work beyond undergraduate training. In fact, no one is required to go to college. Professional athletes have a short shelf life and need to plan beyond their 30’s. How many 40 year old professional runners do you know?

She may be good enough to get a pro contract…but like the journeymen professional basketball/football players, how many years can she last against Monson/Tuohy level competition vs. a lifelong career as a Veterinarian? Do you see her medaling in international competition like the Olympics?
Don’t see that working out. She entered NCSt a year before Tuohy did. Chmiel graduated last year and is already listed as a graduate student. I don’t believe she aspires to run professionally. She wants to be a vet and that’s a long road to finish, school-wise. Her grades, if anything are better than Tuohy’s and the talent level is a notch below. Even in HS Tuohy would routinely lap her. They make it sound like they they were neck and neck and the facts don’t bear that out. Chmiel is a very good runner but I don’t think their motivations or talent levels are the same.
Where does this info come from? Touhy has never lapped Chmiel. They just finished 1 n 3 at xc, do you realize how good you have to be for NCAA #3 xc? Chmiel also qualified for indoor nats in 5k/3k.
Chmiel does want to be a vet, but that does not preclude a pro running career before starting vet school. Chmiel does not have track speed, but she can aspire to a pro career like Makena Morley, 5k,10k, roads, xc, half, marathon.

I would love to see Chmiel win the 10k this outdoor season. She is such a great team player and it was her that started this great recruiting pipeline to NC State that has led to their distance dynasty.
She appears to have the Mamba mentality. No excuses and winning is everything. And I think KT is clean and legit, plus she's modest and humble. As an aside, RIP Kobe.

been saying this too, kelsey chmiel can win the 10k outdoors this year, kelsey finished 3rd behind valby and katelyn
shes beaten anyone that she could possibly face in the 10k .. and her kick is better now, she had the same last K as katelyn at nationals
Laura Muir completed Veterenary School during her peak running years.
Different system in UK. Vet/Med school are undergrad programs straight out of HS. Specialisation starts in general right at college level, no liberal arts degree. If you get 2 yrs in and want to change majors, you basically throw out 2 years and start over. This causes much more serious thinking about career at age 18/19 than we are used to.

But did she ever get a standing O at a conference meet and make it look so easy and then give credit to others, at a meet where she could have won nearly every track event?

If every runner took your attitude, there would be no Joe Klecker, Woody Kincaid, Heather MacLean, Kate Grace, or Elise Cranny, because they were only good enough in college to be journeymen. They should have just moved on to their adult career.

Talent alone isn’t enough…you need motivation. I could be totally off base, but I don’t sense a burning desire to run by Chmiel. She’s a very hard worker and is very disciplined…something required by good students. If you review her interviews after a win she seems almost indifferent and responds in a very matter of fact manner. Contrast that to others. Maybe she’s just an odd duck and doesn’t emote in a way you’d expect from a champion…with evident enthusiasm. Henes has commented on this as well, in the past and suggested that perhaps others may be better suited to represent her program after a win. She labeled her as ‘very consistent’. This doesn’t translate to the type of description you’d expect in talking about your best or even close to best talent. Of course this is just my impression…like she’s distracted…

she havent ran a 1500m this year but 4:24 mile converts to 4:04 1500m which is right on her PR 😊 stunning progression !
haters gonna hate
Nice progression though I don’t know that 4:24 mile translates to 4:04 1500? With a closing 63 second quarter that translates to 16 seconds per 100m or perhaps 18 seconds for the last 109…yielding more like a 4:06 1500…maybe 4:05 1500 for 4:23 mile.
Is there an expectation that she has to go to grad school? It seems grad school is the new bachelor's degree (not meant as a slight against this post but just in general, it seems every 20-something I know is in grad school).

I gotcha on this now and understand why it would be needed for her in her given situation. I think she'd be marketable and work in the Communications/Marketing/Sales industry in the sponsor of her choice.
