Fun fact: M60 half WR is 1:11:31 set 10 years ago.
Honesty, I think it is a little tougher to hit those %s training for an 800. You certainly get more notoriety doing it in a marathon though at that age. At age 52 an 800 in 2:06.78 is a 90.62%. He wouldn't have the leg speed for that.
M55 800 national leader is 2:05.71- 93.54%
Really at Masters national level 90% is competitive, but even a 90% may see you finish out of the medals in certain events
Thank you for mentioning Masters women here. I beat Michelle Rohl for our 55-58 age-group title in this past weekend's USATF Masters 5k Championship in Atlanta, and I know that we are among the many, many, many passionate women for whim the most difficult aspects of racing at a high level nationally include not only the labor-of-love training and sacrifices but also trying to drum up sufficient *financial means* and, if one has a full-time job, the *time off* from work in order to actually attend the meets.
Is it possible that the WSJ might not even realize that this is not acceptable behavior for real runners? The person who wrote the article might be totally clueless about why TRT is unethical for a person who is still racing?
TRT is hardly unacceptable for "real runners". The amount of gatekeeping on LR is sick. If you run in anything but waffle trainers, hand timed on a cinder track you are a CHEATER.
(1) People can pay to have WSJ articles, so...yeah.
(2) I would love waffle trainers and a cinder track near by.
The truth is the real men have the dignity to age naturally. They might do what they can and not be reckless to slow the decline, but, what's more important, they accept the reality. That's what makes them real.
So, the likes of Joe Rogan, Sly Stallone, Dan Bilzerian, Dorian Yates & Huge Jackman aren't "real men?" Lol
Celebrities on TRT have had access to therapy for longer than anyone else. You might be surprised at which celebs are on TRT, and how much success they had.

No, they are actors who wear make-up, get plastic surgery, and pretend to be hyper-masculine. But no, they aren't real. They are paid to portray some Hollywood version of masculinity. People on "reality TV" aren't real either, even though it is in the name of the genre.
p.s. More power to those guys, I have nothing against them. But they aren't very real in my book. They are positioning themselves to earn a (very good) living.
I think the age grading calculator gets soft after 40 to 45. That is the age when the the last of the real elites hang up for good. I always wondered what would happen if guys like Haile continued to be as competitive. We almost had that with Lagat but he hung up for good too. I know this is true because I know someone who has hit over 90% age grading and he was no where that fast grading wise when he was young even though he was training much harder and more back then.

C'mon man...Rogan is a former UFC fighter who hosts his popular YouTube channel, Yates was a 6-time Mr. Olympia & Bilzerian went through Navy SEAL training.
These are real, masculine Alpha men.
John Sonmez, a self-improvement coach & founder of "Bulldog Mindset," is only in his 40s & is on TRT. He explains that he was having trouble with motivation for his workouts & that his SGBH was high lowering his free testosterone. This guy is a very real, masculine man - I wouldn't mind having a physique like that:

C'mon, man, grow up. I'm sure these men are all nice people in real life, and I'm happy for their success and all, but you can't be such a dupe for entertainment and advertising. They're all trying to sell you something, and the TRT-inflated physique is just part of the sales pitch.

I'm 42. (LIGHT YEARS from 51), and yesterday I did 10x400 at goal 5k Pace. The slowest was 78, the fastest was 74. 1 minute jog. This was not a big workout, either by volume or effort.
Today, my first mile will be 830, and it will take several miles to loosen up to run 715-730 pace.
Even tomorrow yestereday's workout will be in my legs.

My mistake - you're right, Rogan was a commentator & not a fighter.
So what if John Sonmez is a YouTube influencer & self-improvement coach. He was once an obese, unhealthy, unsuccessful beta male. He completely turned his life around & now has some successful business ventures, including his self-improvement business. Men aren't forced to buy his program or even follow his free advice that he gives on his channel. What's impressive with him is his transparency with his TRT use. There are so many fake natty fitness influencers out there selling programs & giving training advice to gullible men.
I posted this earlier. This gets to the heart of TRT. Dr Osborne out of Florida is an endocrinologist & expert in regenerative medicine, as well as fitness expert. TRT isn't just about having a certain low number that qualifies an individual as "hypogonadal." But it's more about symptoms of low-T which affects quality of life. Testosterone is the golden hormone for men & affects a lot more than just lean muscle mass & strength. It affects your mental well-being. Depression, irritability, mood swings, insomnia, poor libido, lack of motivation to exercise & train can all be symptoms of low-T for the aging male.
Dr Osborne himself is on a low-dose TRT program and looks phenomenal for a 52 yr old. It's about replacement dosages & not supraphysiological dosages where guys become enhanced beyond their peak youth levels with an increased risk of complications.
What is legitimate Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) and when is just a guise for steroid use? There can be a very fine line between testosterone repla...

A number of elite/world class women did compete well into their 50s and JBS has posted some stellar 60s-plus times. Likewise, there are former elite men competing (Tommy Hughes in IRL, and here in the US last weekend four time OTQ qualifier John Glidewell ran 95.6% age grade for 5K).
Also note that the decline is not linear for anyone. Just because someone ran 90 or 95% as an open runner does not guarantee that they'll be doing 90%+ when they are in their 50s and 60s. Likewise, a decent, runner maybe running sub 15, 2:25 back in the day may simply age better or be more motivated when they are 55, 65, or 75 than those who were former stars.
I have been running national-level races for years now, there are plenty of runners at these races who may have been OTQ level when they were younger, but are nowhere near that age grade level now, even though they say they would like to do that.
One more thing, just look at the numbers of masters athletes in the US or worldwide actually running at a level of 90% or more. There are surprisingly few.

I think that is incorrect. These top runners stop running because they can't run fast anymore. After so many years of hard training their bodies are worn out.
Fast age group runners are not as talented and usually started later in life with serious running but they are still much more talented than most other runners.
There is also a huge difference with age records and an individual slowing while aging. The individual curve looks very different than the combined talents of the last 100 years for each year combined. Don't ever think you can have a parallel age slowing as the world age records.
