Ok. But could have sworn that was the narrative after the 5000m. Valby is a very impressive athlete. One of the strongest college runners I have seen. But Tuohy just flat out ran her down after spotting her a big lead, and Valby does not fade. Tuohy just outran her. Maybe it is because Tuohy looks young, but it easy to forget that Tuohy is a beast. I think I'm done underestimating her.
Parker did get much better. Also Solinsky said her track prs are a thing of the past. I think her and tuohy both still have upside but I just think we haven't even seen the type of runner Parker will be
Valby was not part of the team scoring. Touhy only needed to beat the rest of the field to secure her 1 point for her team. If she catches Valby and wins individually, that is great but she cared most about winning as a team.
Exactly this. And even more than that, Tuohy takes certain negative outcomes off the table with a more conservative start. It's more risk-averse, thus "stabilizing" the team score. Once she was past a certain point in the race, she could afford to risk a bigger move and go for the win as even a failure to complete the task would have left her in a great position for NC State.
It was honestly brilliant. Team first, and then took her shot. And she didn't miss. Perfectly-executed tactics to serve both team and individual goals. Tuohy's race is one that lots of people could learn from when trying to strike that balance.
It’ll be interesting to see how valby and touhy improve, how fast they actually can be. Hopefully they can become good professional runners, but we’ve seen young female phenoms fizzle out before. And men too (Cheserek…)
There will undoubtedly be other excellent runners who join the ncaa or improve significantly to challenge them if they don’t continue to improve. It’s hard to be dominant in the ncaa for years.
but im excited to see if these two get to the point where they are chasing records and times and not just trying to win races.
it’d also be awesome for them to have epic ncaa careers and then not go pro and move on with their lives. Letsrun wouldn’t be able to handle that and would be speculating on the what-if’s for decades.
How exactly did Tuohy impede other women (like Cook or Chelangat etc.) by staying with the pack so long? I admit that I don't know about the psychological aspect of team running. She might have boosted her team's confidence by not following Valby right away. From the standpoint of a single/professional race it was quite risky. Even if she knew what she herself could do, she could not be exactly certain of Valby's abilities. 11 sec. is a lot in a 19-20 race. It's not a case like the superior finisher being reasonably confident to make up a few seconds in the lats 2 laps of a track 5k or so.
Cook admitted that they didnt go with valby simply because katelyn tuohy did not
katelyn's teammates was not the only one trusting katelyn with the pace, everyone trusted katelyn, and she only went off after the 4k mark(after not liking the 12 second gap) which we cant see on that video when she really started to separate from the pack
it was a very hilly course, if katelyn went with valby, it would affect everyone's race and it would be a different outcome, it could blow up her teammate's race who isnt used to the extremely fast opening pace, the nc state women powers the last k, that is how they've been winning races and that is how you run a cross country race, you stick with a pace you;re comfortable with and dont hit a wall in the last mile because thats when the racing starts
If katelyn ran with valby, the entire front pack would have gone too and it would force everyone to run a faster pace, that will make or break them in this course...
katelyn stayed until 4k+ .. truly believe katelyn could not have run this race any better, it was a master class run .. the pros also calls it "masterclass" -- so fun reading pro's burner accounts
New interview!
11 min mark
Sam and kelsey both said that they trust katelyn so much, the host asked if katelyn could have done (running for herself and helping the team) it another way or better ... kelsey said, SHE NAILED IT.
the team needed katelyn to stay with the pack so they could conserve energy because as they are used to only picking up the pace at 4k-4.5k, its how they race, and perform better
this literally was the best executed individual and team race ever done .. all nc state runner caught many runners in the last kilometer, which is due to the almost-perfect pacing
James and Cory are joined by National Champion cross country runners Sam Bush, Kelsey Chmiel and (maybe) Katelyn Tuohy on this week’s podcast! We’ll discuss ...

There was a quote somewhere of Valby saying she knew from spectators that KT was coming. She wasn't blind....then again, it wouldn't have mattered. She was not able to respond at all when KT caught her...PV held her speed, but she was not able to push back at all.
Again, this is no insult to her..she gave it all she had. Tuohy was just better.
I have no idea how she will run for track...but I'm not sure why everyone is saying she is so much faster than a few months ago - just because of the SEC result? If she is faster, than so is Tuohy. I guess we will see.
Tuohy picked up her pace at 3.6km (very obvious on the original video)…
She was really cruising. You can see it on the video. Why did NCAA chop that k out of the upload? Its the whole part where she starts to surge. Really unfortunate.
It is too bad, that is literally the best 2 - 3min of the race.
anyone here wants me to lend their espn account? for me to record the whole thing???
just change the password after im dont recording
anyone !!???
If I am ambitious I have it on a dvr, would have to see about getting external esata hd and cutting it there so I could load to computer or something...been thinking about that as a dvr expansion...but I am NOT going to loan my account info

Semi, do you have a VPN? If so, you can register into ESPNPlayer. YOu can get a 7 day free trial...I assume you could watch the race there. Mine just ended. But it was fairly easy to get in. I used Germany as my location.
Katelyn was not "sure" she was going to win. Priority number one was helping the team win the team championship. She let Valby get out ahead knowing that she might not be able to run her down later. She was fine with that. Her goal was to place as high as possible amongst all of the other runners in the race. Once she got to a point in the race where she felt as though she had guaranteed herself of not having a major problem, she took off from the field. She still did not know she was going to catch Valby at this point.
Nope. ur wrong, watch katelyn's interview
Everything was planned all along, kt and coach henes talked about the plan.. and where she would passvalby .. watch that last hill again.. you see how she powered through the last hill?? it was an epic sight and her teammate was beside her screaming
Completely agree. Either there's just a bunch of Valby fans here or everyone here is braindead. KT is way too competitive to put the team ahead of her singles title... you have to be blind not to see this. KT had full confidence she would win no matter what disadvantage she put herself in because she knows Valby's ability and her own ability.... it's not rocket science. Do you think Kipchoge was ever concerned about losing a marathon to Bekele?

katelyn did a zoom interview with several media outlets yesterday
she said she had 2 goals, to win the individual title and to help her team win the team title again, in another interview, sam bush and kelsey chmiel said that they trust katelyn so much that whatever shes going to do(asked to do) she'll get it done...and she did.. the host asked if katelyn could have done any better or done it in another way(leading, pacing the pack and winning the individual)...and kelsey said. "SHE NAILED IT."
sam added that dont want the opening pace to go really fast because thats not how they run, same with kelsey, altho kelsey can hang with a fast pace, its not the right way to run this course for them as they (nc state) only pick up the pace in 4k-4.5k mark
even natalie cook too, she said she didnt go with valby bcause katelyn didnt. talk about respect!
katelyn has developed a new skill, she now so good at pacing and timing her kick for the win

I love tuohy and her win was super impressive. But what was the thought behind letting valby go if she was going to go for the individual title eventually? Not sure how running with the pack was beneficial to either Tuohy or her teammates, especially because she and Chmiel weren’t running side by side / near each other or anything. Wasn’t it potentially much harder to significantly negative split- especially knowing she might not have enough real estate to catch Valby? Wouldn’t it have gotten into Vlabys head at least as much having someone with her when she tried to break away?
She won, her tactic worked. End of story.
If she had lost I could see questioning why she didn't go with her or after her earlier. But that seemed perfectly timed and I noticed that Valby DID look spent- there were points where she was leaning back a bit- a sign of tiring.
She put herself at an advantage, not a disadvantage. Running in a pack as long as possible is the ideal strategy. Running solo out front is a major disadvantage. I have watched this strategy fail hundreds of times while watching it work a handful of tiems when runner is much better than the competition.
I haven't been on these forums in a bit and just saw this thread. I am not going to wade through this entire thread because I believe that Tuohy had two purposes and two purposes only.
To answer the question of the thread title, "What was the purpose of Tuohys ncaa racing tactic," it is really quite simple.
1. To hang back in the pack in order to help set pace for her team and, thus, help them win the title.
2. Pull away at the end once she helped pull her team along and go for the individual title.
Smart race by Tuohy with a siple answer to the question. Why is there 5 pages of discussion about it?

sam and kelsey said katelyn was indeed supposed to NOT go with parker to keep the pace "chill" in sams own words so that their race wont be ruined.. katelyn basically sacrificed some portion of her chances of winning an individual title to help the team .. people who watched the full race says at some point it was over 13 seconds, and katelyn had to make a decision .. she did go at 3.9k or like 4k mark, she basically closed a 13 sec gap running 2:55 kilometer then passed valby on the last hill
