I was sitting halfway down the track on the finish line side (on the side the race started). I never saw her on the track before the gun. Approximately 45 seconds after the gun she ran on the infield (coming from the direction of the check-in area) and stopped at the timer tent next to the start/finish line. She talked with the group of people in the timer tent (the announcer was in the timer tent also) and then ran back to the check-in area. She then proceeded to the track with the heat 2 competitors and ran in heat 2. She won heat 2 easily. Later I found out she had been DQ'd when I asked at the "Coaches Corner" on my way out of the stadium after the last event) why she was allowed to switch heats and run in heat 2. The official at the Coaches Corner said he thought that she was DQ'd.
It would be a heck of a marquee race if Sam McDonnell, Dalia Frias and Sadie Engelhardt all ran the 1600 at CIF finals.
Frias HAS to run the 1600, since its her only event now.
Engelhardt is only in the 800 and 1600, and there's no way she drops the 1600 and only runs the 800.
So that leaves McDonnell. The ONLY reason she wouldn't run the 1600 is if her and coach are thinking that her main goal is to win a state title, ANY title, and with Frias and Engelhardt out of the 3200, then the 3200 is McDonnell's best shot.
I think there's a good chance that McDonnell drops the 800 and 1600 and only runs the 3200.

But there's another consideration here. McDonnell teammate Tiffany Sax sits in the 10th position for SS D1 3200. If McDonnell drops the 3200 then Sax moves into the 9th slot and advances to SS D1 finals.

Thanks for your added color. I was never really buying the narrative that they saw her walking to the start line and hurriedly started the race with her 50m away.

and this is confirmed in the actual meet coverage: https://youtu.be/ZRIX8ydynt8?t=16489 Dont see any sign of her before the gun sounds or hear any commentary that would indicate someone was still coming but we are going to start anyway.
but i think weve beaten this horse enough. 5 pages on this issue? my thinking is Frias has moved on and is focusing on the 16 (unless her coaches are still appealing). So lets do the same. excited for that race.
This is a recurring nightmare of mine. I'm late to the starting line. It usually involves climbing down a wall draped with cargo netting. I sit down on the track.. I either can't get get my sweatpants down past my ankles or can't get my shoes tied. The race is about to start. Eventually I get to the track but the race has started and I'm way behind. The track is like a BMX track except synthetic. Maybe even a figure eight with small hills,, and I struggle mightily to catch up, sometimes I do, sometimes not. Then I wake up sweating.
Me too. Takes 30 min to tie my spikes and take off my sweats and I miss the start. Recurring dream a few times a year. Brains are weird.
70 year old white guys need to still be able to boss someone around in their lives. This is where they get to do that.

We just witnessed an official in my state DQ a predominantly black/Puerto Rican team for cheering along the straightaway, but did not DQ any of the predominantly white teams. Had it all on video. Official didn't even care, just targeted that school, which won the 4 x 400 and stripped the kids of their medals. Such a shame.

:13 - Announcer says over the loudspeaker that Frias is in the race.
:30 - Announcer says over the loud speaker "And it looks like NO Frias out there."
:45 approx - Snavely says Frias arrives at the timer/announcer tent at the start/finish line, then leaves to go back to the check-in tent. (This is NOT shown in the video, but seems to be accurate.)
1:06 - Frias is seen standing 10 meters to the left of the check-in tent (near the 330 meter mark on the track) She is facing left and wearing a yellow singlet and dark shorts. She is talking with 1 boy and 2 girls, including her main competitor and the top seed in heat two, Sam McDonnell of Newbury Park. Frias still has her trainers on, and has no number on her singlet.
2:19 - Frias is seen by standing by herself (10 meters to the right of the check-in tent, in front of the silver benches) putting on her spikes. She still has no number on her singlet.
4:27 - Officials overhead saying (while Frias is standing at the check-in tent) - "All right, what's up?" "We have to add this young lady, she missed heat one........[unintelligible]......." "What's her name?" "Dalia Frias." "Oh my goodness!"
(There were 22 girls in heat two, so they gave Frias number 23, which you can see on her singlet when heat two starts.)
Rich Gonzalez said that Dalia was on the track walking towards the start line when the race started which is not accurate. In fact, when her race (heat one) started, Frias didn't have her spikes on or a number on her singlet, which indicates she never even checked in for heat one.
It's not like Frias checked in for heat one, got a number to put on her singlet, ran to the bathroom, and then was late getting back for heat one. She wasn't even remotely close to being ready to race in heat one.
This is what most likely happened - When it was announced over the loud speaker at :13 of the race that "DALIA FRIAS IS IN THE RACE", Frias was probably outside the stadium somewhere. (There are a few areas outside the stadium where runners warm up, and she was probably in one of those areas.)
The loudspeaker saying her name at :13 made Frias realize that her race had started without her, so from she ran from wherever she was to the stadium, then over the track, and then across the infield to the officials at the start line, arriving there about 30 seconds after the loud speaker announcement, which matches Snavely saying he saw her arrive at the start line at :45 of the race.
If they hadn't announced Frias's name over the loud speaker right after heat one had started, who knows, maybe she would have missed heat two as well.
The officials can't be blamed for not waiting for Frias, when she hadn't even checked in, and didn't even realize her race was about to start.
Conclusion - Snavely was right, and Rich Gonzalez's report was way off. When Gonzalez said that Frias was on the track, that was actually Frias crossing over the track from whatever other part of the complex she had been, and that happened AFTER the race had started. It was NOT Frias walking up the track to the start line ready to race and the starter firing the gun without waiting for her to get all the way to the start line.
I like Frias, and I'm disappointed that she won't be able to run the 3200 at the state meet, but this screwup is 100% on her and not on the officials.
The Frias controversy overshadows the tremendous accomplishment of Newbury Park's Sam McDonnell. She won her heats in the 800,1600, and 3200. According to the announcer this has never been done before in the CIF Div 1 prelims.
i was actuallt there and saw that frias was running onto the infield as they were lining up on the line and checked in very quickly at the tent. once she got her number she started running to the start but couldn't get there fast enough before they blew the gun.

Yep. It's done and over and Frias is not running the 3200 and can put all of her efforts into winning the 1600 in a fast time. It will be interesting to see which events McDonnell runs. The 3200 is not a lock, especially is she is doubling back.
Sophia Nordenholz has a 10:05 from last year, the fastest time in the state at Woodward (16:46) last year and finished 9th at EB.
There is a freshman at Montgomery (Santa Rosa), Hanne Thomson, that no one is talking about who has run 4:45 and 10:12. She was the Div III XC champ.
Del Oro’s Riley Chamberlain has run 4:45 and won Stanford in 10:14. I have no idea what any of these other girls will be running but it could still be a fast race without Frias.

How far was she from the race when it started? In retrospect she probably should have kept running and caught up to them.
She was in the middle of the field when the gun went off. I have talked to her before and she seems very sweet, this is so sad to hear but ik she is a tuff girl and will bounce back and crush the mile at state. GO LITTLE ROCKSTAR

Mia Barnett did it last year. 4:53.04 to win her heat of the 1600, 2:11.99 to win her heat of the 800 and 10:38.97 to win her heat of the 3200

The video PROVED that what you said is NOT what happened.
The video shows all the girls at the start line and also shows the check-in tent in the background. When the gun went off Frias was NOT at the check-in tent, nor was she running between the check-in tent and the start line.
The video shows that what Snavely wrote is correct:
"Approximately 45 seconds AFTER the gun she ran on the infield (coming from the direction of the check-in area) and stopped at the timer tent next to the start/finish line."
So the order that things ACTUALLY happened were:
1. The gun went off.
2. 13 seconds after the race started, they announced over the loud speaker that Frias was in the race (even though she wasn't).
3. Frias heard that loud speaker announcement, realized that her race had started without her, and THEN ran to the check-in tent.

The announcer may have meant that it was the first time it had been done in that section , and in that division. (And I'm not sure he was right about that.)
And Sam McDonnell actually finished 2nd in her 3200 heat, and only got moved up to first after they decided to DQ Dalia Frias.
And Sam McDonnell wasn't even trying that hard in her 3 races, so her times were only decent, nothing special. But I agree that she is a very good runner.
