This is absolutely normal. Middle class = people who have / had to work to support their livelihood and they made it past the poverty and misery. They're closest to bourgeoisie and they're the most opposed to proletariat as the actual wealthy have more than enough for themselves and thus don't mind sharing a sliver THAT much.
This is using Marxist terminology, but it's not ideological, rather an observable fact. Modern example: Amazon IT staff are vehemently opposed to Amazon warehouse staff unionising because a union will result in share price going down and they might not be upper middle class anymore. Perhaps the prevalence of the middle class in the West in the XX century is the reason communism never took off and socialism had to change significantly.
Actually you should be excited. If people don't want to work, and you do, your labour becomes rarer and by supply and demand this means the price of your labor goes up. Do you not want to be paid more money?
The “anti work movement”is just something rich kids who don’t have to work talk about (usually with daddy’s money) or pseudo intellectuals on NPR spout off about.
Most people need to work to even achieve a decent quality of life.
Nobel, but that still requires funds of some sort...money from the government, money from those you would be taking care of, or BORROWED money. People can not live on NOTHING.
My Dad pays for our food and I've moved in with them. That said, in Canada the government can subsidize someone like myself if they leave a job for eldercare, but as I was laid off at the beginning of the Covid shutdowns I didn't qualify. I have some retirement savings, but will be forced to use them at some point as I very much doubt that retirement is any longer in the cards for me. Things can happen and they can happen fast, I sure hope no one else on this board has to go through this kind of stress.
Ok. You are obviously defensive about this. You fall into category #1. Not exactly "wealthy", but you are "subsidized" for the time being. I think you miss the whole point. The point is that people do not and can not just decide not to work because they don't want to. Money has to come from somewhere. One of the below 4 categories is where the money comes from (or doesn't come from as MIGHT be the case with homeless people, though many get money through begging).
1) Independently wealthy. If so, then more power to them. They can do with that wealth what they want. 2) Freeloaders. Someone is enabling them. Bad enablers, bad! 3) Homeless. Well, that's not good and throws up the possibility that they are not mentally able to get a job. 4) Criminals. There have been cases where people have lived in the woods or in a tent or whatever and stole what they needed for years.

I love how you were just blatantly wrong with your four categories and instead of saying ‘I guess I really didn’t think this through and maybe people have a lot more unique situations’ you just doubled down and suddenly it like ‘oh you have cancer and three months to live so you’re surviving off credit cards to spend more time with your kids before you die? Well that counts as independently wealthy congrats!’

Nah. I reject that. I have no problem saying I was wrong, but nah to this. Define "independently wealthy" for me. I'll define it...enough money coming in from somewhere to pay your bills. If someone is getting enough assistance to pay their bills, that qualifies. Now, I COULD decide that someone like that taking money from the government is a "freeloader", but I actually don't think so, so I won't make that case, BUT, if I just wanted to be right, I could easily take that stance. So, "independently wealthy" is it for this circumstance. People do not and can not just sit at home because they don't want to work (for any extended period of time) without having some money coming in in some form, either legally or illegally.

Wow, Greg is independently wealthy by this definition.
Just because a definition doesn’t match your poorly thought out argument doesn’t mean you can just redefine it.
The only thing limiting folks is what they have in their head. I paid my way through college, etc. Stop playing a victim and get to work and get some credentials! Most millionaires are self made and do not inherit their wealth. You have that wrong.
I can't tell if you're trolling or not, so good job if you are.
Quite frankly, you're wrong though and just another one of the people that think "only their skill, hard work, and ability put them where they are", which of course is only a small part of the story. Without opportunity, you are extremely limited.
How would you quantify a the chance of a person born in Botswana at becoming a millionaire in USD versus someone born in the USA? Hopefully that is obvious enough. Well there are similar differences if you are born in some extremely poor area versus an extremely wealthy one.
I was talking about the US. Most in the US do make their own money and there are tons of of opportunities. We have 50-open positions at work and are having a hard time filling them do to no supply of qualified people!
It is harder today adjusted for inflation. We should look at the sources of that and work on that. Having said that, if it is harder, maybe we work a little harder (limits on that I know) instead of throwing in the towel or live a simpler less expensive life. In the end you are responsible to support yourself.
'"Just work harder"
Dumbest thing I have seen on here.
What is your solution for you personally? Give up, steal, do something illegal, beg, borrow? Working harder has always worked for me.

And living within my means has always worked. I've only borrowed for a house, car, and education and nothing else (and I mean nothing). I don't pay interest on credit cards, They pay me. That is key (avoiding debt)!
