Even if you throw out 2016 Rio, Hocker needs to bag 2 outdoor WC medals, an indoor WC victory, multiple Wanamaker and 5th Street Mile victories, plus a slew of US national championships to equal Centrowitz's competitive record.
If we are talking times, I think Centrowitz is a 3:28.x/ 3:47.x man if Dragonflys come out in 2015.
If Hocker ends up running 3:29, 3:48, 12:57 but doesn't pick up any global hardware there is no way I'm calling Hocker a better runner than Centrowitz.
It's all about the titles, no one remembers times beyond the nerds who are deep into the sport. You think anyone in the UK knows what Web Coe ran for 800/1500? Or what Mo Farah ran for 5/10k? Nobody cares because they were multiple Olympic champions.
What do you do at the end of your career if you're someone like Alan Webb whose great achievement is running a quick time, get a massive printout with 3:46 written on it and stick it on your wall? Get a tattoo of it to show people? Screw that, you want medals and titles.
It shouldn't be all about titles, and if you are honest with yourself, you know that it really isn't. Titles go to accomplishments. Times go to who the better runner is.
Edwin Flack won two gold medals in the 1896 Olympic Games in the 800 and 1500, and then a bronze in TENNIS.
Is he a better runner than about a million athletes who never won an Olympic medal of any kind? Better than Alan Webb? Better than Nick Symmonds? Um...NO.
