You are completely missing my point. A student who chooses to go to college should pay for it. It is the sole responsibility of the student to bear the monetary risks involved in pursuing an education with no future recompense. Why should society prop up an individual’s ill thought plan?
If you want to live in a fantasy world divorced of pragmatism, be my guest. Just don’t make me pay for it.
And I believe you are completely missing my point.
1) An 18 year old kid is convinced that taking on huge loans to attend college will pay off when he/she graduates and is employed with wages reflecting that degree. Predatory banks see how naïve they are and soak them with escalating rates and hidden balloons. Yes, there are also kids/families that choose, knowing the risks.
2) Major political donors, individual & corporate receive PPP loans. Less than two years have passed and over 80% have been forgiven. YOU and me are paying for it. Why the distinction of showing no rage in "society propping up wealthy and corporation's ill thought plan"? Why only toward the students?
I am not suggesting that all student loans should be forgiven. I would like to see interest rates reduced on those loans with reasonable payment plans etc. However, if I had to choose between 1 & 2 above, it is a no-brainer for me. If we can afford and you are willing to pay for #2, why not #1? Where were those who "don't make me pay for it" and "it is the sole responsibility...." when the richest 1% received a $1.7 TRILLION tax cut pushed off to the middle class in 2017?
In my eyes, the "fantasy world divorced of pragmatism" is that which can accept a "have" and "have not" society that can bury their head for the stable yet get on their soap box for many of whom are teetering.
