That's kind of silly and I've never seen that in a qualifying race. Mike Smith is no dummy, knows Young's strengths and weaknesses and probably figured 3:44/13:24 ability would allow him to qualify in any scenario. He just had a bad day and no strategy would have made a difference. It's very likely he would have been dropped at 13:40 pace.
