Simply put, after a long period of high mileage, excessive lactate builds up in the legs thus causing them to become "Heavy" and or "Flat". Periodically it is advisable to lower mileage and run a hard race or hard workout at a pace substantially faster than the target race pace. This "Flushes" and or "Purges" the waste products from the muscles and refreshes the legs.
It works for all middle and long-distance athletes. Try it and you'll be surprised!

Excessive lactate builds up? Can you supply a link? Flushes and purges? This one too?
