Now if only more schools would relay more heavily on standardized testing there might be some semblance of a meritocracy in academia -- which would result in clearer admissions expectations and more opportunity for the less privileged (those with less access to advisors and fancy extracurricular activities, for example) to stand out. Rich kids will always be able to afford tutors and coaches, but they can only do so much and when tests are super simple (like the SAT, for example) many of the same strategies can be had for practically zero cost.
Of course, many of the most corrupt schools are doing precisely the opposite in an attempt to keep judging applicants PRIMARILY on the basis of skin color, legacy status, and other factors that should be irrelevant.
And for the past 40+ years, the liberal/democrat teachers unions have dominated the curriculums. That’s a fact. I’m not trying to make it political, but it is what it is.
Our schools used to be very highly rated on a global scale. They have been declining substantially in the aforementioned decades.
The unions focus on salaries, work conditions, teachers' rights, professional development, pensions, health benefits, hours, vacation time. Regarding instruction best practices, peer review and mentorship are issues the unions concerns itself with.
You can't blame the unions for the curriculum being taught. No child left behind, which reading method to teach young kids and common core math are not union led issues.
As for somebody who doesn’t engage in curriculum, she sure has a lot to say about… curriculum.
You’re likely a bit more fooled than you think you are.
Parents across the country are fighting against critical race theory, gender ideology and generally inappropriate lesson plans all while the left denies any of this is being taught at all.
BTW, high school physics students in the U.S. really suck, at least according to the advanced portion of the TIMSS exams. Quite a while ago we were so bad that we had our own category, below the rest of the world. Now some other countries suck as much as we do. The truth is out there if you want to find it.
Why do we suck? Curriculum. Lack of resources. Lack of AP physics, even in many suburban schools. Lack of qualified physics teachers. It is well documented. If engineering schools in the U.S. were a true meritocracy they would be inhabited by mostly foreign students. Oh, wait, many of them are.

This is what is going on at most of the POC filled public schools in NYC. When the kid said he wrote 3 to 4 paragraphs the whole school year, trust him. I went through that decades ago. I got 99 for the class grade. Teachers looked the other way because they can't fail the entire class. This school is 97% minority which includes 1% Asian. Make what you make of it but NYC taxpayers spend the most of any the states so it's not about funding.
“During the course of the semester, I’d say I wrote about three to four paragraphs,” said a Gotham student who notched an English credit by enrolling in the D&D meets.
I’m originally from Baltimore - I think their public schools are around 5% white and like 2% Asian; the rest are almost exclusively black. Spending is around $21k per student (4th most in nation) yet it’s quite literally the worst district - maybe only DC or East St Louis are worse

This has nothing to do with the teacher's union and everything to do with an administrator, a principal who is concerned with the school's passing rate.

Well, let’s take a look at the democrat-dominated school boards then. In the meantime, with everything you listed, let’s ask how education levels are continually going down when unions are more powerful than ever.
And please, don’t tell me that people like Randi Weingarten is for the betterment of our youth. She’s one of the single most destructive ‘leaders’ in our education systems history.
Yes, blame the school boards for the falling standards and frankly the parents who all believe their children are geniuses who deserve nothing less than stellar grades. Education levels are failing because kids would rather spend 3 hours a day on social media than 30 minutes reading.
Unions are not more powerful than ever. Unions (teachers, nurses, police, firefighters, truckers) are primarily concerned with the needs of their members. It's the old management vs workers mindset.

So much racism on this thread. Above is an example

How is it indicative of racism. He is just stating facts. You can't handle facts? You want made-up stuff?

In NYC, the chancellor of education and district superintendents choose the curriculum, not the union, not teachers, not parents. Currently the mayor and chancellor have given 3 reading curriculum choices to elementary school superintendents. Some parents and teachers have voiced their displeasure at some of them but again the chancellor and superintendents decide.

You dont think they’re in bed with each other? Union bosses are nearly universally in bed with Democrat politics and politicians.

Of course, eg “blacks are innately fûcking stupid” is racist even if you can claim it’s a fact based on some average IQ stats; as is a naked “fact” like “blacks commit the most crimes” without further context.
AA discriminates based on race, legacy does not. Is this really so difficult to figure out? At most of these top institutions, the student body is only ~50% white. So despite what you racist idiots say, legacy admissions will affect more minorities than whites. Since all you care about is race, that should be great news for you.
Convenient isn’t it that the discrimination(legacy preferences)that white conservatives don’t mind is the one that overwhelmingly benefits white folks. What a coincidence !
Except if you read my post you would know that's not true. Minorities outnumber whites at elite academic institutions. The legacy should benefit more minorities than whites pretty soon, not that legacy benefits specifically apply to any race.
Now if only more schools would relay more heavily on standardized testing there might be some semblance of a meritocracy in academia --
People wouldn't like it if it was a meritocracy at elite schools. They would have something 60-70% asian student bodies as white are replaced with better students. You think people like Rojo got into an Ivy based on merit? The issue would be that these elite schools would lose a lot of their benefits if they stopped letting in subpar white kids whose only value is connections.
In reality, the schools will end up figuring out how to get the student body they want. Need some more weak white male students? Let's expand the swim, lax, and ice hockey teams.
I read a study that predicted what would happen if colleges banned it. Campuses would end up being around ~47% each white and Asian.
But of course, the "party of science" doesn't want to accept that IQ gaps exist.
That would be fantastic! There are FAR too many blacks on campuses these days who have no business being there and were only admitted because of "affirmative action" i.e. racist admission policies.

Many of the best students from Asia come to the USA for their university education rather than remaining in India, Indonesia, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia, etc. Imagine if many of the best students from the USA, Canada, and Europe went to Asia for their university education. I suppose Asians might be complaining about the disproportionate representation of Caucasian western students in their universities.
Here are the just-published QS World University Rankings for 2024. Of the top 25 universities, only 6 are in Asia (and 3 of those 6 are in Australia). One is in Canada, one is in France, one is in Switzerland, , 5 are in the UK, and 11 are in the USA:
