Gave shades of 2017 WC in London — questions about the favorite's abilities to win in a quick race, quieted by a victory in a 26:40s race. In that 2017 race, Mo Farah took gold over, ironically, Joshua Cheptegei. The apprentice has become the master. Titles in both slow races and fast.
The CBC reports thought cheptegai was lapped and were complaining that he is blocking the rest. Pathetic!
most of the cdc coverage was very good but they definitely got confused when cheptegi moved up (they thought he was being lapped) and did not really get it till <400 to go at which point they admitted they were no longer sure
Got emotional watching Grant! Wow! Can’t help but wonder if he wouldn’t have had that trip moment and got off of his rhythm and work his way back up, he probably wouldn’t have got caught at the end by Aregawi.
But (almost) as equally proud of Nico! He always impresses, but I didn’t expect him to be with the pack at the last lap, especially at such a hot pace. I mean even he got under the previous Olympic record! He didn’t seem too enthused at the finish but I hope he’s proud of himself. He will be an absolute BEAST in 4 years with more professional development and no NCAA schedule messing with his peaking.
Also disappointed by my people. At first I thought they had a plan. That they were gonna keep alternating and push the pace. But they left it too late. Maybe I am being harsh. 26:43 is still very fast and Olympic record by more than 15 sec.
And lest we forget that hindsight is always 20/20 — there have been so many past posts on LetsRun about how dumb the Ethiopians are for not pushing the pace to take the kick out of kickers. And here, they do just that, and posters on here are saying it was so dumb to do such a thing.
At the end of the day, the best man usually wins. I don't think the podium changes today no matter how that race was run.
GRANT FISHER! Anyone else with wave of emotion and tears of joy? Haven’t felt this since Molly Seidel bronze 3 years ago. God, I love this sport.
On the commentary, you could hear Goucher start to get choked up and have trouble talking. Totally valid.
One of the biggest reasons I love this sport. You get to truly follow an athlete through the journey, from Grant Fisher being some kid on the radar in high school, to winning Footlocker, to winning it again, then going sub 4, then NCAA champ at Stanford, then duels with Morgan McDonald where he just can't quite break the Aussie, to Bowerman, to being so close in Tokyo, then Eugene the following year, then injury, then switching back to his high school coach. Now he gets his medal. Wow! Also, he and Molly both share the distinction of being the only Footlocker champs to medal! One bronze each for boys and girls, pretty cool!
Why weren't lapsed runners moving out? Is there usually someone there to tell them to do so, or is just sportsmanship?
There's no rule that says you have to move to the outside lanes when getting lapped, but it's a dick move if you don't, especially towards the end of the race when the leaders are scrambling for position. I think with about 250m left the leaders had to move between slow runners on the left and avoid running into the table with water to their right.

That was Mark Lee - has has done stupid things before - can't they get someone better? It even confused Moorcroft (the other announcer who did most of the talking). But DM should have known better.
The last Olympic LONG distance race where Americans were screaming at their TV, might have been all the way back to Munich 1972 with Pre. We had the Centro win in 2016 in middle distance but that was more of a sustained sleepwalk from the front. Nothing this exciting for the generic American fan since 1972.
What a stupid interview with the record setting relay team. Did he really have to remind them that they might be replaced for the final?
And incels get bent out of shape when Sha'Carri walks off from stupid questions.
Interviewer may not be aware that only 1 can be replaced for the final. Given they have just broken the WR, what would be the point of replacing any of them?
