I think you see the limit of the so much cross training. No gear change and no kick. If she really wants to be a great pro she will have to figure out how to up her running
So is the limit to cranny/ESP/Karissa's training that they can't lead a 14:40 race even against a college girl. The kenyans won't have much to be worried about. Ethiopians will still have bad tactics lol. We need Monson back she could have broken them in this kind of race.
They were’t trying to PR. They were trying to win (and make the team). They didn’t have the ego of “won’t lead a 14:40 race against a college girl.” They were just racing smart and savvy. The fact that you would have too much ego to race smart doesn’t mean because they don’t, they are weak.
Kessler also needs to learn how to run in a pack. He's just asking to get tripped or knocked off the track like at Pre
Yes Kessler has not been the best tactically and has gotten himself in trouble at times, but at least he's taking the appropriate steps to fix this. He's racing a lot to help gain experience. That inexperience showed at Pre when he tripped off the track, but it's a learning experience which helped him run a great race today and make the team.
Should’ve gone to the ncaa so he could race like all the collegians who are older than him. Pro meets and diamond leagues don’t prepare you as well as the big sky conference champs would have 💪
Who’s the girl in the 800 team that interviews like a contestant in a miss universe pageant? I fking love her. Seems so genuine
LOVE the US team - all the women seem very personable, likeable, intelligent and genuinely thrilled. I also loved Akins' response to Johnson: "No - I wasn't thinking any of that, I just had to run", or something to that effect. Love the honesty, and the perfect answer to those ridiculous questions asking athletes to meta-analyse their last 100m twenty seconds after a race...
Uh, one of the three was--hint: the one who goes to Stanford. But I wish them all well because they're all good runners and the sport is, after all . . . running.
Juliette Whittaker making the team only a couple of years after setting the high school record is awesome. I said that JJ got her dialled-in and improving her race-savvy in a thread where a person was doubting him, saying she hasn't even PRed in two years. Well look at her now, she ran a strong race here and got a PR.
The difference in her actual racing ability is night and day between now and when she was in high school. Her World Under-20 semi-final race was one of the most frustrating things to watch. She wasted so much energy shuffling up and down the pack and running in lane 2 so much of it and eventually got out-leaned for the win by a person about 2.5 seconds slower than her. Now she's making an Olympic team over many faster and more experienced women.
Gotta feel bad for Mu....But lack of racing can't help...Every time she has raced the announcers say they are worried when she is in the pack
Yeah, maybe, but would it have mattered? They bunched up horribly right as they came into the curve, she tried to cut closer inside, and her 8-foot-long legs kicked back into Raevyn.
I'm not sure there's that much she would've done differently. With her body, she just needs to stay the hell out of moving traffic.
I guess if she was in 1:55 shape again, she could've just stayed clear of the pack and won it anyway. But I don't think she was strong enough to do that this year.
Everybody who knows anything knew this was exactly how this race would play out.
And I'm sure she knew it, too, but understood this was her best bet anyway --even though she was probably doomed to finish 4th.
She ran brilliantly. And it puts a cap on an absolutely brilliant year.
Man, I really disagree. At some point she has to learn how to race from somewhere that isn’t the front or the most she’ll ever do is hope to make a world final / be the female Stewy McSweyn.
She's not a kicker. She can get much faster in the 5k but her best hopes at the global level is in the 10k and beyond on the roads. I simply don't see an ability to turn those legs over quickly.
That is a really hard way to lose for Mu. You can see that she is visibly upset post-race, but I also can't help but feel that part of this is down to such a limited racing schedule. Opening your season at the trials is not a smart choice. I hope that she re-groups and finds herself a new coach after this season.
She was tripped. Didn’t even make it 100 meters. I’m with you on the need to race more, but this wasn’t bad tactics or pacing. Moving towards the pack, she got clipped from behind. Just a waste.
It was her back-kick into Raevyn, when she cut in too sharply in a very tight pack.

She could have guaranteed a spot from last place into the second lap. There was simply no need to do what she did.
